borowiec Posted August 5, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just got a Leica M and am trying to set things up the way I am used to on the M9. On the M9 I have the display show both the histogram and the red/blue clipped areas at the same time, that way I can quickly see whether it is clipping that will matter to me. I can't figure out how to do this on the M, it seems I can either get the histogram or the clipping display but not both at the same time. Also, annoyingly, if I review images with the histogram off, it will not display the histogram after I make an exposure; I have to go back into Play mode and hit info twice. I very much hope these problems are just due to my lack of understanding of how to set things up—I hope Leica hasn't reduced the functionality of the M compared to the M9, or I just wasted $7000. If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it.
Advertisement Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Hi borowiec, Take a look here Histogram and clipping display. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
chris_tribble Posted August 5, 2014 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2014 Gosh I think you're right. I hadn't registered it as issue - and rather liked the way you could cycle through the info. Really sorry. Looks like you've wasted your money. On the other hand, if you can persuade yourself not to chuck it in the bin, stop chimping, and look at the files you get from the camera, you might find that NOT being like the M9 has its advantages. There are so many other things to like with the M and FW 2.0.15 that you might decide to keep it.
nlm6 Posted August 5, 2014 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2014 I agree with the OP. It is something I miss that the M8 had. I don't know why they took it off. It was/would be useful in situations where you know you are going to have some clipping but need to control/know where it is happening. Currently it just takes to long to see see both and cycle back then cycle back through the info screens.
250swb Posted August 5, 2014 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2014 I have mine set to show highlight and shadow clipping on the review image, so if in doubt it is an instant judgement call whether the scroll through and see how bad/good the exposure is via the histogram. chris_tribble Posted August 5, 2014 Share #5 Posted August 5, 2014 Sounds like the way to go...
viramati Posted August 5, 2014 Share #6 Posted August 5, 2014 In all honesty the highlight clipping even when set to the minimum value is not very accurate as what you are seeing is a jpeg and not the RAW image hence even though you may get a red blinky on the LCD more often than not I find the info is actually all there when viewed and manipulated in Lr5. I understand your first issue, but on this one, why would you expect the histogram to automatically display if you have it set to 'off' ? As for 'wasting' your money, if you see no other differences between the two cameras that prompted your switch in the first place, then yes, you probably wasted your money. Jeff Actually, that's one of the the things I'm bothered by, or am just unable to figure out: where can you set the histogram to display automatically, as on the M9? I see where you can choose between a luminosity and RGB histogram but whether or not it shows seems to depend on what you last had showing in playback. Of course I'm aware of, and have seen, the differences between the M9 and the M. I just find it annoying that Leica has reduced the functionality of the M compared to the M9, just as I resented their eliminating the battery display and frame count that was on top of the M8. borowiec Posted August 6, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted August 6, 2014 Yes it's black and I think it's going to be on its way back to Leica, as the rangefinder is out of calibration. I've seen the post on this forum that explains how to adjust that oneself, but I'm reluctant to go at any internal parts with solvent, which is apparently necessary on the M.
