hockey44 Posted July 9, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I have an M240 and my Lightroom library is rapidly growing. I use an iMac with TimeCapulse for back-up. However I want another back-up to store away from my apartment (just in case of theft). Since this new back-up is my "emergency" is it worth getting a SSD drive as there are no moving parts and I would periodically simply copy the most recent library? Yes there are many of 1TB portable drives for Mac- like the Western Digital Passport series, however they have moving parts (discs) and just thinking is for this "emergency absolutely safe" back-up is best on a SSD. Yes they cost much more-- but my 30K+ photos are priceless to me. Thanks for suggestions on an easy robust and reliable solution.

kdriceman Posted July 9, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2014 It is not necessary to spend the money on an SSD just for offsite backup when you are continuing your Time Machine backups. You will always have 2 backup drives (plus your original catalog) - one offsite and one TMB. The probability that both fail at the same time is infinitesimal (and an SSD would not appreciably improve on that) especially since the emergency drive, moving parts and all will rarely be used. Jeff S Posted July 9, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 9, 2014 This is a frequent forum topic…in addition to the feedback you receive in this thread, you may want to try the search box at top right using terms like 'digital backup system', 'ssd', etc. You'll find lots of discussion, with many differing views, and maybe a useful nugget or two. algrove Posted July 14, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 14, 2014 Another viable option is using either a 2.5 or 3.5 bare drive correctly formatted and use the OWC Voyager Q. Pull out the backed up drive and store it anywhere you want. Or better yet do it with a few bare drives and you can rotate them. Your apple easily recognizes any drive in the Voyager.
