Etruscello Posted September 11, 2014 Author Share #81 Posted September 11, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) To clarify, I am calibrating to the monitor. Who would not? Canson IBP is not sepia toned; if the tone were much more intense, it would, as I said, "approach" sepia (as opposed to selenium, etc.) I do not want to come to absolute conclusions because I'm involved in an ongoing process of experiment and discovery using many different variables for many different types of images. The only advice I feel capable of giving at this time is that one try the Canon Pixma Pro-1 for B&W printing. It has a significant rebate at this time. Jeff S Posted September 11, 2014 Share #82 Posted September 11, 2014 Epsons now discounted, too….business as usual in the world of printers, where the profits are in the inks. My comments concerning a disciplined and calibrated workflow only very marginally concern monitor calibration. Rather, the comments were meant to cite the myriad other settings and factors that might contribute to, and significantly change, print tonality and separation, to an even greater degree than one's fortunate, but unintended, profiling action. There are lots of potential intended…and unintended…actions that can make the same image on the same paper appear cooler or warmer…in shadows and/or highlights…as well as many other appearance differences. MarkP Posted September 11, 2014 Share #83 Posted September 11, 2014 I use Canson Baryta in a Canon 9500 Pro. It drinks ink like a soccer fan beer, but the results are excellent. I too have a 9500 MkII and never cease to be amazed by the results. A friend who is one of the country's best professional scanners and post processors for fine art photography helped me set up and calibrate my screens and printer, and taught me how to use photoshop properly. He tells me that the Canon delivers results as good as he's seen from any professional inkjet service. I know Epsom seems to be the 'industry standard' but the Canons seem to be very underrated. I primarily use Ilford Gold Fibre Silk and now the Mono for B&W but will try the Canson at some time. You're right about the outrageous cost of ink - why don't they just give the printers away. However, I'm just careful choosing what to print andI try to do so in batches rather than one-offs.
Jeff S Posted September 11, 2014 Share #84 Posted September 11, 2014 I primarily use Ilford Gold Fibre Silk... No longer produced (I stocked up a lot for color work)….but Canson Infinity Baryta is very similar…I prefer it for b/w. Jeff

Jeff My supplier here tells me that is not the case but supply can be patchy. Regardless I have plenty of A3+ stock. It's still on the Ilford website. It's still on the Ilford website. Ilford Imaging (paper business) declared bankruptcy and shut down earlier this year. US supply dried up. Am I missing something? It drinks ink like a soccer fan beer, but the results are excellent. I too use the Canon Pro. I guess if I can afford the camera and lenses ( $$$), I can afford the ink the Canon uses. It is quite thirsty but the results are fantastic. I've never used an Epson, but the Canon is so good I cannot imagine anything better.
MarkP Posted September 12, 2014 Share #88 Posted September 12, 2014 Ilford Imaging (paper business) declared bankruptcy and shut down earlier this year. US supply dried up. Am I missing something? Jeff I see what you mean . Very confusing reading on the net . ...but what do you make of this? Note the ILFORD Imaging Europe GmbH ©2014 ILFORD at the bottom of the page. It hardly looks like the website of a defunct company. My precious GFS and Mono Silk are still listed as current products . Regardless, I might just stock up on some more GFS and Mono Silk on Monday. MarkP Posted September 12, 2014 Share #89 Posted September 12, 2014 On the topic of Canon printers, has anyone upgraded from, or compared the 9500MkII and Pro? I'm very happy with the 9500 but wonder whether the Pro is 'better'. I assume the Pro also takes a maximum paper size of A3+

Well, if only US operations are affected, maybe I'll order from you from now on. Seriously, though, I'd appreciate knowing if you determine continued production. In the meantime have you looked under 'Where to Buy' on that Ilford website I linked in the post above?
