Jeff S Posted August 15, 2015 Share #21 Posted August 15, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Geoff is it worth the 400 bucks to have it...................does it make that much of a difference? I have no problem with the current screen and the AF just saw this and wanted to ask? The irony is that many folks love these type screens because they offer a closer approximation of what one gets so superbly with M RF focusing, which you find problematic. Of course the RF is more limited by focal length. Jeff

Jeff I agree with Jeff that the best way to make an S focus at the level of precision of an M, , is to install the 16001 screen.

I am hoping Jeff that because I can see 100% clearly looking into the S viewfinders that this type of screen may work for me............ hoppyman Posted August 16, 2015 Share #24 Posted August 16, 2015 Neil, it really just comes down to whether you want to spend the money for the extra features. At a rough estimate the replacement screen investment is maybe 2% of the body cost? They both work the same for AF. With the replacement screen you lose the cross hairs indication of the single AF point. I don't find that an issue as you still have the horizontal line (with the split image) For MF you gain the options of using the microprism collar or the split image. For the rest of the screen area both screens are exactly the same.
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted August 16, 2015 Share #25 Posted August 16, 2015 Geoff I'm cool with the money and thinking that due to the S diopter I won't have an issue seeing the lines joining up.
Jeff S Posted August 17, 2015 Share #26 Posted August 17, 2015 You didn't try a diopter or eyeglass correction with the M? Jeff
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted August 17, 2015 Share #27 Posted August 17, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) You didn't try a diopter or eyeglass correction with the M? Jeff Mate I tried everything with the M. I went to the Leica store in KL and they let me try the whole range of Diopters, I couldn't find one I liked. I bought an adjustable diopter from Japan and again it didn't do anything for me. I then spent a fortune on glasses of various sizes and magnification and still I struggled, now with the Leica S adjustable diopter everything in the view finder is crystal sharp so hoping that the Microprism focusing screen will be another improvement tool
Jeff S Posted August 17, 2015 Share #28 Posted August 17, 2015 (edited) Mate I tried everything with the M. Including getting the RF (and lenses) checked? I've yet to find crisper manual focusing on any camera using 28-90 (equivalent) focal lengths. A microprism screen is at best an approximation based on my experience with various cameras, including ones with beautiful finders. But eyes are funny....and personal experience varies... jip Posted August 21, 2015 Share #31 Posted August 21, 2015 Maybe they gave you a faulty M Neil, hoping you would go for the more expensive S system. Hahaha!
