kb7001 Posted June 28, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted June 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just acquired a new X2. Fine camera. Do you think the EVF either Leica's or Olympus' is an essential accessory and why?
Advertisement Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 Hi kb7001, Take a look here evf need. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mjh Posted June 28, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted June 28, 2014 Only you can tell whether an EVF suits your shooting style. If it does then I would suggest getting the cheaper but technically equivalent Olympus version.
Schnitzer Posted June 28, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted June 28, 2014 Since the X2 has a fixed 36mm equivalent lens, I would think that an optical viewfinder (35mm) would be a better alternative. It would provide a direct real image, not a pixelated version and for about the same price or perhaps cheaper.
kb7001 Posted June 29, 2014 Author Share #4 Â Posted June 29, 2014 Good point. I did order the evf by Olympus from Amazon. It has not arrived and it is returnable. I had not really considered the optical view finder. I will have to quickly rethink this. Is there a ovf made by Olympus that would be suitable? Â Neither the Leica branded EVF or the Olympus are the best quality in respect to the current technology found on today's EVFs. But they work perfectly fine and the lesser cost of the Olympus EVF makes it a worthwhile consideration. Â Remember that the EVF will give you all the info that the LCD has, including focusing confirmation and 100% framing accuracy (and also playback review.) It's very handy (at times even necessary) when the sun is too bright to read off the LCD, etc.. And since the LCD is turned off altogether while using the EVF, it's something that might be important in situations where you don't want the LCD to be on. Personally, I've found that those reasons are enough for having the EVF.
rjans Posted June 29, 2014 Share #6 Â Posted June 29, 2014 I use the Olympus viewfinder. Using a viewfinder I found it to add stability when taking pictures at slower shutter speeds. Â Best
Schnitzer Posted June 29, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted June 29, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't know if Olympus has a 35mm optical viewfinder. Leica and Voightlander both make excellent ones. Voightlander is less expensive. Zeiss would also be a good choice if one in good condition is available on Ebay. JOM51 Posted June 30, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted June 30, 2014 On my X1 I use the Olympus optical viewfinder (made for 43rds cameras), bought it second hand for only 40 EUR, and it works well.
F.Juul Posted June 30, 2014 Share #9 Â Posted June 30, 2014 You will hardly regret getting the EVF for your X2. In bright light it is very useful, and it is actually not bad at all - very bright and well working in my opinion. The tilt option is also useful for shooting low angled shots. I bought my X2 second hand and the Leica EVF was a part of the deal - I must admit that it is on the camera most of the time. Go for the OLY and save some bucks! Schnitzer Posted June 30, 2014 Share #10 Â Posted June 30, 2014 The Olympus VF-1 is usable on the X2, but is not optically correct. It shows the correct diagonal angle of view, but has a 4:3 aspect ratio and not the 3:2 ratio of the X2.
TommyC Posted July 1, 2014 Share #11 Â Posted July 1, 2014 Should I get the EVF2 for the X Vario? It seems so outdated. Will Leica come out with an updated design based on the Olympus VF4?
mjh Posted July 1, 2014 Share #12  Posted July 1, 2014 Should I get the EVF2 for the X Vario? It seems so outdated. Will Leica come out with an updated design based on the Olympus VF4? Leica just recently introduced an improved EVF with a similar specification as the VF-4, but it is for the T which has a new, improved, but sadly incompatible interface. Your best bet is the Olympus VF-2. Don’t spend too much on a viewfinder that may not be future-proof.

MDCT Posted July 12, 2014 Share #14 Â Posted July 12, 2014 Have you thought about getting the Brightline OVF? If you are not using it for manual focus it is a delight to use.
jaapv Posted July 15, 2014 Share #15 Â Posted July 15, 2014 The Voigtlander 35 mm optical viewfinder is excellent, sturdy metal and the round shape fits well to the style of the camera.
