DTD Posted May 1, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) A bit ago I posted a thread about a problem I had metering with my M6. I had got caught with ISO 1600 film on a bright sunny day – it was as if the meter wasn't working at all. Originally, it was thought the batteries had gone dead. However, yesterday I was out again in bright sunshine – this time I had ISO 100 film in and double checked the film speed was correctly set. I couldn't get the LEDs to light at all, even at f16 at 1/1000th sec and all points south. Tried getting a reading from the ground. When I got back inside the car it would meter fine. Now I'm new to Leicas, but have plenty of experience using match needle metering on my manual SLRs (Olympus OM-1) So my questions are: If the conditions are too bright is there any indication? (blinking LEDs etc) Does it sound like my camera is at fault? Thanks

carstenw Posted May 1, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 1, 2007 When my M6 can't get a proper meter reading, the lights flash. I would say that it sounds like a camera-specific problem, not a design problem. Perhaps others can confirm.
DTD Posted May 1, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 1, 2007 Thanks for that. I'm starting to think this camera's cursed. Anyone else help me with their experiences?
luigi bertolotti Posted May 2, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 2, 2007 I have not direct experience with M6 but I would suggest you to control the electrical contacts in the battery recepctacle ; I had similar problems with another camera : if this is the problem, easy and cheap to adjust. DTD Posted May 2, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted May 2, 2007 Will do and I'll also try a new battery.
Leicanomad Posted May 3, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 3, 2007 Hi, I routinely shoot in very bright conditoins and have never encountered any of the problems you're describing - unfortunately it sounds like a one off problem with your camera. In additional to cleaning the battery contacts, it may be worth cleaning the three gold contacts under the rear cover. These are used to connect the rear panel dial to the rest of the metering circuitry. Use a soft pencil eraser or Q-Tip with electrial contact cleaner, anything more abrasive will remove the plating. -jim
odd Posted May 3, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I have a M6 ttl and have had similar problems with the metering a short time before the battery is empty. If it’s like the problem I’ve had, the problem will be worse, until the battery is empty. My suggestion is to try to change the battery. Odd

rob_x2004 Posted May 3, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 3, 2007 What happened when you cleaned and put new batteries in? One thing I notice with MP and R6.2 which presumably have same battery compartment, they chew through batteries in moist weather.
DTD Posted May 3, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted May 3, 2007 Cleaned all the contacts and changed the battery and I'm very glad to say it seems to have sorted the problem. The LEDs are now visable in bright light. Thanks for all your suggestions. My Leica curse is lifted!
