Woody Campbell Posted May 1, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) See the images below. This is an early model M8 that made its roundtrip to Solms. It's running 1.10. The preview changes from the good version to the broken version after 4 seconds or so. The files are fine. My second M8, with a similar history, is fine. Choices: 1 - Send back to Solms. 2 - Wait for the next firmware update. 3 - Grin and bear it. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Hi Woody Campbell, Take a look here What should I do with this M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted May 1, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 1, 2007 Since you have 2 of them send that one back.
eronald Posted May 1, 2007 Share #3 Posted May 1, 2007 Since you have 2 of them send that one back. Reset the camera first and reload the firmware. If it still does it, send it back. This looks like a hardware failure. Edmund
Eoin Posted May 1, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 1, 2007 Woody, Email the pictures to leica solms and explain what's happening, they will either suggest a user fix you can perform or ask you to return the camera to them. They are the experts, ask them!.

robsteve Posted May 1, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 1, 2007 Have you tried different sd cards in it?
Chuckcars Posted May 1, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Woody, exactly which card are you using? What happens with different ISO? Have you formatted the card? Have you turned the camera off, removed battery and started over fresh with a fresh card format?
rwfreund Posted May 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 2, 2007 Stop chimping? :-)
Woody Campbell Posted May 2, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted May 2, 2007 Thanks for all of the suggestions. So far "stop chimping" works best. I had previously tried a cold reboot (left the battery out for a week). I've tried several cards, all of which work fine in my healthy M8 but all of which have trouble with previews in the sick copy. Same problem at all ISOs. I re-installed 1.092 (which is the way it came back from the factory). It works fine - no garbled preview. When I reinstalled 1.102, the problem came back. Eoin's idea is certainly worth a try - I'll report back.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 2, 2007 Share #10 Posted May 2, 2007 Now that is strange Woody , it came back after you reloaded 1.102. Try reloading it on top of it with 1.102. let me know please. i may have another idea to try
thomi Posted May 2, 2007 Share #11 Posted May 2, 2007 I have the same effect. I called Leica and they know the problem. It is called the «Birkeneffekt». They will solve the problem with a future firmware. Im my case the effect accured only about twice.
Eoin Posted May 2, 2007 Share #12 Posted May 2, 2007 ... I called Leica and they know the problem. It is called the «Birkeneffekt». Are you sure something didn't get lost in translation and it's "broken effect". Woody on a more serious note, try re downloading the firmware from leica and installing it, just in case. Other than that if leica is aware of this "brikeneffekt" as Thomi suggests, and it happens with every or almost files reviewed, I'd be returning it to leica for immediate repair or replacement. I would not be waiting a further 2 - 4 months for a FW fix.
Guest Bernd Banken Posted May 2, 2007 Share #13 Posted May 2, 2007 could it be the "brick - effect"? We learn that every 14 days another "effect" comes up the horizon... Bernd
thomi Posted May 2, 2007 Share #14 Posted May 2, 2007 Birke is a birch-tree in English. The pattern of the birchtrees looks similar to the effect I got on the monitor in those rare cases, the error occured. I don't know, wether the Birken Effekt is the official name of the error at Leica - it was just mentionned in a discussion with Solms. When you understand all the names of little errors of the M8 you speek German. :-)) Welcome, dear visitor! hammam Posted May 2, 2007 Share #15 Posted May 2, 2007 OMG! Ask Mike Johnston what he would do. Joke aside, if all suggestions fail, by all means, return it to Solms. Do not accept that.
Eoin Posted May 2, 2007 Share #16 Posted May 2, 2007 Sorry, I was being sarcastic birken > broken, but either way it's broken and should be fixed without having to wait for the next FW update, God knows we've waited long enough for the fixes for most the "known design" problems and still waiting for the rest, filters & AWB. Woody Campbell Posted May 9, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted May 9, 2007 I sent an e-mail to the Leica repair address on Leica's website and got an answer the next day (this seems to me to be verry responsive). I'm sending the camera back. The answer was: "Dear Mr. Campbell This effect has previously not occured. I read that this is with every image, independent from the SD-Card and only with 1.102. Is this correct? Please send the camera to the customer service so that our engineers can analyse this fault, I guess you don't want to continue without a firmware update."
