X Vario AF Unreliability

And just so a "no reply" makes you believe I too have not had issues, I have.

Most I suspect will be the way I use the camera, but from a simple point it and shoot it way of imaging, it gives me occasional mis-focused shots. Not enough to say "wow, something seriously wrong here", but enough to make you wonder.

Of late my success rate has increased, but I am a firm believer it is not as good as it could or should be. I'm not talking fast moving action or sport, simple stationary family subjects.

I know Leica have better things to do than listen to the constant whine of unhappy customers, but this focus issue has been pretty well documented across the board. It's an excellent camera to be sure, just could be slightly better. AND...... if a firmware update was all that was required, why not pump one out?

I have just been looking through these posts on the focus issue. I have just ordered a second hand XV and I noticed the first comment was written in June 2014. Eight months ago, I would of thought if Leica could have sorted the focus issue out, they would have done so by now. I am not sure what to do about the camera now, it is due to arrive on Thursday. I guess its a case of try the camera out and send it back if there are any issues with it.

In my current discussions with Camera Care Support London Mayfair, my evidence in file submitted to them and the very convincing evidence presented above by Gobdulm has elicited the belief that a firmware update might not be the answer (based on the software's pedigree first introduced in the S-series cameras). My belief is that it is an AF module weakness which is only randomly evident in some models. Mine has been called forward for attention by Wetzlar. I will post an update of the outcome in due course.

See my post #23 above. Your vendor should offer a warranty if the original has expired, though I guess it should still be valid. The model is young.

My X Vario misses every so often, even in good light, but this happens so infrequently I havent thought much about it. It seems better than the X1 or X2 on average...

And this is a very good assessment of where mine is at the moment too, well said.

Douglasco. Get the X-Vario, try it and keep an open mind. If you believed half the internet blurb out there about this camera, and for that matter it's predecessors (X1/2) you'd not even give it a thought. They are all fine cameras, really are, so just give it a go.

Leica USA did replace the camera last year after I sent it in and had them check it out. It was a straightforward transaction. Leica USA is top-notch and the new, replacement XV works great.

I never updated this post as I do not post on this forum any longer (except for this response). I've found that there are much better venues available for Leica owners.

My XV arrived today, it came with a brand new unused camera case, unused Leica lens hood and the camera looks brand new. I have only taken about thirty pictures so far, but the focusing speed and accuracy is better than my late X-Pro 1

The colours from the XV are wonderful, certainly an underrated camera.

I'm very happy with the AF performance of the X Vario and its identical sister X typ 113. It is contrast detect, so slower than phaser detect, and likewise it suffers in low light/low contrast situations. It is also extremely accurate when there is something to lock onto, and most of the time even when there isn't. Its also fast in good light, though not fast enough for action.

Overall, I got exactly what I expected in terms of AF performance, which is one reason I bought the new X as a low-light companion to the X Vario.

Maybe I have been lucky but although my X-Vario also misses focus occasionally 99.95% of the time it gets it right, and single spot  focussing seems to work best, but if I ever have any doubt I switch over to manual which really does work superbly and is almost as fast to use and get right as the rangefinder on my M240's. All in all this is rapidly becoming my all time favorit camera. Don :)

Me too.  I own the X Vario and also the X (typ 113) and just sold my Nikon Df and lenses to fund an M-E to use alongside my M Monochrom and M5.  Five Leicas, and while the cheapest of the digitals, the X Vario is the one that leaves the house with me on most days.

My X Vario misses focus from time to time as described in various threads on the forum. It is annoying when it happens because I presume I got the shot but after downloading it I realise I didn't. I mostly chalk this up to the difference between my old DSLR which was spot on when it came to auto focus, vs the kind of tech that the XV uses.  It isn't the most annoying thing about the camera (I would like the camera not to auto-off or auto-snooze) but it is annoying when it happens (Under 5% of the time)
