Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I might have the opportunity to buy the M Monochrom for 6500$ (with 3 years warranty and a special gift, a thumb up). The camera has been used only one week and it's being sold by a camera shop.

Do you think it's a good price ? I know the difference between the M240 and the MM, specially the technical improvements of the M240 but I love the pictures from the MM.

What do you think about this deal? How fast will this camera lose value in 2-3 years for example?

Thank you for your input.

J

6500$ (assuming you are talking about US Dollars) seems like a good price considering what they go for new and on eBay. You say that you are buying from a camera store, so assume you can verify the origin of the camera and ensure that it has not been stolen. Impossible to say how quickly it will lose value over 2-3 years, as it will depend upon how heavily you use the camera, and any new models that Leica release in the mean time that will impact the value and desirability. But you could look at how the prices of second hand M9s have gone down since introduction and the release of the M240 to get an idea.

So if you want it and can afford to buy it without making too many sacrifices, why not?

I notice that you are located in Switzerland, and are talking about a camera in US Dollars. If you are planning to import this from the US, make sure that you have taken import tax into consideration. Personally I would only buy such a high value item face to face from a local dealer

If it were me, I would cautiously assume for purposes of the purchase analysis that there is something wrong with the camera that will require 4-6 weeks at Leica. Something major like a sensor or rangefinder replacement. So you will want to be sure that there will be plenty of time left on the Leica warranty. I'm assuming there is.

Ideally, the camera would not have been registered yet with Leica, in which case you would want to get the original purchase receipt from the seller and register it yourself and be guaranteed to get the benefit of the Leica warranty. If the camera has already been registered, Leica technically doesn't have to honor the warranty with the camera in your hands. So you'd want to be sure to get the seller's assurance that he will cooperate with you in case the warranty needs to be used.

The risk you are taking is that there is something wrong with the camera like a bad sensor or RF issue (e.g., I had to have the entire RF mechanism replaced on my MM, and I bought it brand new), and you will not have the benefit of the Leica warranty. I think this should be a manageable risk if you take the right action steps.

Given the precision of this tool, there are so many things that could be wrong with it. And you want to be sure that you can get it fixed through Leica free of charge.

I would also not rely on your own devices in verifying that there are no problems with the camera. I would send it in or take it to Leica and have them check it out. You may not be able to readily ascertain whether there are any RF mis-alignments or sensor cracks or scratches.

I don't think $6 500 is a steal such that you could make money flipping it. But it is a very good price.

Good luck.

Adam

Thank you guys for you answer. I asked few questions to the camera shop owner which is a leica official reseller. I could put the warranty in my name. The camera will be under warranty for almost 3 years (2 years and 10 months to be accurate).

The camera shop is located in switzerland, and prices are in francs (francs and dollars are quite even). I've also seen in the store window a M9 at 2690, the original price was 7000 if I'm not wrong. Do you think I should expect a similar price drop for the MM in 3 years ?

Thanks

It might well be the same, as with all digital equipment. New and better stuff will be released and the 'old' gadgets become cheaper. The Monochrom may have better resale prices because even among low-volume Leicas it is even more low-volume ^.^

But there will be a new Monochrom (why not, it sells pretty well) and then the prices for the current Mono will drop..

Buy it, it's a good deal.

Compared to what we pay here in Germany for an MM that condition, we have to pay at least 8.000 USD which means 5.999 EUR or more and with a 2 years guarantee only.

The loose of value shouldn't be an issue. It shouldn't bee seen as an investment. It is a camra taking photograhs. Enjoy this tool as much as possible, make large prints and you will love it. I bought mine recently same condition here in Germany and paid 5.800 EUR. It had 64 actuations an full guarantee, one week old as your.

I love this wonderful Piece and eversince my M lives in the shelf... except some certain situations when color is needed.

Buy it. You're covered by the warranty and a Leica dealership.

I personally think that the MM will hold its value well. It makes wonderful use of the CCD sensor and is plenty fast. It's for a special breed of photographer that doesn't need the video or LiveView or color from the M -- this is not a camera for a large market. For that reason, I believe that Leica will not be making a Mono M 240 in the near future, if at all.

This is a camera that is loved and treasured. Buy it. Love it. Treasure it.

The price is very good. Not the cheapest but in mint condition from a store and with thumbs up this is a good deal.

As to how fast it will lose value is impossible to say. But if you are concerned with value loss you shouldn't buy anything digital. However, being that the MM is a specialty camera, and the best one available at that, it *could* hold value better than a M. Or not.

I see the Monochrom as somewhat of a milestone camera, a mint one could well be a collectors item down the road. I have no idea how many was produced, but I doubt it comes anywhere near regular production Leicas.
