ME2

It seems to me the M-E is very astute marketing psychology. If Leica had kept the M9 in production but lowered the price, it would have angered everyone who recently bought an M9, and it would have tanked the resale value (even more) for loyal buyers who happen to need to sell/trade their M9 to move up to the M240. So Leica eliminates the frame line selector and USB and paints it a funky color and gives it a name that evokes the R-E, a slightly de-featured R5.

So whenever the next generation M comes out (meaning, a new sensor, not just a cosmetic P version), the next generation M-E might well be the M240 body and 24mp sensor, with some arbitrary deletions of features many people don't care about anyway like movie mode and/or the ability to accept the multifunction grip. No re-tooling or re-writing firmware needed on Leica's part. Very astute marketing.

Saw a video with Stephan Daniel a few weeks ago where he mentioned they had paid off the equipment costs for the M9 allowing them to lower the price on the M-E. Eliminating the USB and lever preview surely helped to cut costs. Two items I will never miss, YMMV.

I would like to see a "classic" digital RF continue. Zero interest in Live View, video, or adapting R lenses. Would a better LCD screen be appreciated? Sure. Peppier image processing engine? Sure. All I want is a digital M that is as close to the experience as an M2/3/4 as possible. An M-E with a few updates to 2014 technology would be welcomed.

If you read the latest rumors you will see that the new ME is a new design .

Except that there is no new M-E. Perhaps some time in 2015 – and the design will be that of the M (Typ 240) I suppose –, but not this year.

  • 3 weeks later...

I hope they do stay with the CCD sensor for a little longer, but do suspect they won't

If they could nudge the noise performance up by one more stop, slicken the processing time and reduce the thickness to M6 size, my search would be over, the MM is already there save a mm

It might make sense for Leica at a certain point of volume turnaround per model to got the way of Apple.

We might see the tooling and possible parts stock of a current model be reused in an economy designed camera that will be offered next to then new flagship model.

I think this strategy, also used with the M-E is brilliant and can help to win new customers to the M platform (buying lenses and accessories and upgrading to future M bodies).

I would hope that such an M-E model might also develop more into a basic, back to essentials model, omitting EVF, movie mode, functions buttons, etc … making it also attractive to people who are shied away by the jack of all trades functionality of the current M10 (myself included).

Give it the classic cosmetics, Leica M bodies are known for (silver chrome + black paint, no logo) instead of the garish paint of the current M-E and you have a classic digital M.

I would think that Leica is already on this path. With the unibody on the T and the new electronic mount, it will be a logical extension the the future full-frame.
