M240 Aperture priority mode not consequent?

Hello M-lovers,

I have a question concerning working in "Aperture Priority" mode.

ISO: auto (with 3600 as maximum value)

Speed: A (with 35mm as lowest value)

Aperture: 5.6 (as an example)

When I take several pictures in different light conditions, some of them are with aperture 4.8 and other pictures are with 6.8; without me changing the aperture ring that is set on 5.6!!

Does that make sense to anyone?

The camera doesn’t know which f-stop was selected so it has to guesstimate the aperture by comparing the ambient light to the light falling through the lens. This guesstimation will sometimes be off. (This is how all the digital M models starting with the M8 have handled this, see the FAQ: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m-type-240/308500-leica-m8-m8-2-m9-m9p-2.html#post2554303.)

So, even if I set the aperture ring manually on 5.6; the camera system may vary it slightly?

No, it does not. The camera neither knows which aperture you have selected, nor can it change that selection – that’s only between you and the lens. But since the camera doesn’t know, it can only guess, and the result is what you see in the metadata.
