Advertisement Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Hi pico, Take a look here Distortion correction in jpeg?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
quadraticadder Posted June 16, 2014 Author Share #22 Posted June 16, 2014 Why don't you use DNG+ jpeg fine? Files take a long time to transfer. Jpeg basic good enough to show on an iPhone or iPad. Best, Steve
quadraticadder Posted June 17, 2014 Author Share #23 Posted June 17, 2014 The first two files are geometrically identical. Agreed. The Jpeg and DNG were geometrically identical. My bad. Not the DNGs before and after lens profile correction. Best, Steve

quadraticadder Posted June 17, 2014 Author Share #25 Posted June 17, 2014 iPhone photograph good enough to be shown. Vast overkill? No. When photographing family, friends, they often want to see picture right way. I transfer to iPhone or iPad (if I have it) to show them. Simple. hoppyman Posted June 19, 2014 Share #26 Posted June 19, 2014 ........So it would have been nice if there was a toggle to switch on or off profile distortion correction with in-camera jpegs. The jpegs from the M240 are pretty nice as it is, and there isn't much distortion with M lenses, but switchable profile correction would be appreciated. My D800e has the option, and I almost always left it on for jpegs. Mind you, the D800e has sat on the shelf most of the time since the M240 arrived. I’ll look into applying some profile to the jpegs in Lightroom, or perhaps with software that does batch processing. Thanks again for your post, Steve Steve perhaps you didn't understand my posts fully. I don't understand what you are asking correctly perhaps. Maybe you are referring to something else since is is no distortion correction applied by the camera at all. Yes other cameras do it. These M digital cameras do not. Vignette correction by the camera firmware? The default colour profile embedded in the file by the camera? Your image processor settings?

Your image processor settings? ***** Please allow me to clarify. I understand that the camera does *not* apply distortion correction to jpegs. (You must be getting pretty frustrated repeating it! Apologies for the misunderstanding.) As I thought I was saying in my previous post, although the M240 does not do in camera distortion correction, and although I may be in the minority, I think it would be nice if on/off distortion correction to in-camera jpegs was available in a future firmware upgrade or in the next M. Best, Steve. PS: Does the M240 apply distortion correction to in camera jpegs? KIDDING!!! Could not resist.
hoppyman Posted June 19, 2014 Share #28 Posted June 19, 2014 Sigh! You want Leica to add the unnecessary that would do the miniscule so you can decide to not use it To be serious, one main philosophy of M lens design and their whole image chain is to correct as much as possible optically and not at all in firmware. That is a different approach than used by other larger manufacturers in their image chains for a variety of commercial reasons. Nothing wrong with that widespread approach (micro four thirds would struggle without it for example). However that optical excellence is really at the core of why we are willing to pay so much for Leica M lenses. At least why I am. Look into the corners of this nearly uncropped view (Summilux 35 ASPH). Paris on a grey day photo - Geoff Hopkinson photos at pbase.com Look here for zero distortion correction in camera or post with the Elmar M 24 Beach scene photo - Geoff Hopkinson photos at pbase.com On the other hand there is plenty of scope and possibility of nearly anything in Lightroom and Photoshop. Those are enormously powerful tools and the right place for distortion voodoo and everything else besides.

I'll still use distortion correction in Light Room and be glad if Leica decides to put them in a future M. ******
jip Posted June 28, 2014 Share #30 Posted June 28, 2014 It does not correct for distortion, only for a little vignetting, if you want to correct for distortion, use the lightroom profiles.
