M8 vs MM

I did make some nice b&w images with the M8 and looking now they might be better than the M9 results, but could I couldn't abide the crop effect on my lenses. Disposed of it after 3 months and never looked back.

I was mainly shooting with a 35mm Summilux wide open in dark interiors for clients. The M8 needed an even wider Summilux lens for the same view as my film cameras. When the 24mm Summilux came available it was £4000 extra, plus the cost of all the filters. My 90mm became redundant. My 75mm Summilux became little used.

Removing the IR filters to use a lens on a film MP was more than a nuisance and under pressure made me feel amateur. God, what a dreadful camera for me. Nice b&w though.

I now have an Monochrom and an S2 and the latter produces the best b&w IMHO and by a good stretch and the b&w conversions need less post processing to achieve as the files don't need major contrast adjustment and rarely look over processed.

The Monochrom is so much easier to carry around and with filters works great. It provides images that can be very close to film. A hidden benefit is that it works much better with non aspheric lenses, IMO, and selling off the aspheric lenses can make a massive contribution towards the cost of the Monochrom, thereby making your kit not much different from the cost of an M8 with 3 Asph lenses. :)

That's fantastic to hear Rolo: could you post some samples of S2 B&W conversions?

Thank you, Horea

Having worked with both, I'd say the Monochrom beats the S2 by a mile, unless you are allergic to simple contrast adjustment in post processing and have no use for the monochrom's significantly wider dynamic range.

Here's a mx of images from the S2.

Managed in Lightroom, processed in Photoshop & Silver Efex Pro 2.

Hope this is what you were hoping for.

Perhaps you could illustrate your experience with both, Robert ?

BTW, the allergy comment is unnecessary. Was it meant to be offensive and make you appear to be clever ?

I'm investing less time on this site after some disappointing recent interactions with the moderators. I could put up a comparison some place else, but frankly I found the claim about the S2 so far fetched it's hardly worth illustrating. Sorry.

And you wonder why the moderators interact with you...
