Bear in mind leica can't /won't service the M8 for much longer as they regard the bodies as being disposable after about 5 years . .

Rubbish!

There is no hard evidence to support your statement.

If you know something to the contrary, please supply evidence. Rumour not acceptable.

This is simply untrue. Leica strives for full serviceability for at least ten years after end of production - by public statement- (barring disasters like the M8 LCD, when they will provide a fair option) and will probably be able to part-service for much longer.

".......so one ends up with a camera that part works?

Bear in mind leica can't /won't service the M8 for much longer as they regard the bodies as being disposable after about 5 years . The XV is having to be reduced in price in various countries so it might be worth shopping around. Photokina will have some interesting products this year that will make certain products look rather dated re specification, so I'd be tempted to wait for that .

Yes much of this is pure supposition and bunkum - good to see the mods putting the record straight. And as for Photokina, the statement is speculative and subjective - nobody knows exactly which products (if any) Leica might be announcing/introducing.

If I see a M8 for $1500 or less, I would consider it because for me optical viewfinder is what I prefer. Nothing wrong with the X-Vario or T. Maybe I am too old school and do not like holding camera away from me to take photos.

I would avoid the M8. It is quite slow compared to your other options, and many of them are having issues that are no longer serviceable.

Focusing an M8 is no slower than manually focusing any other camera. True some copies have been victims of 'no spares' and have been replaced by Leica on their upgrade path. I guess the majority, however, are continuing to do sterling work. Only today I have been editing some of my M8 files and they are stunning, comparable in quality with my later Leica cameras.

Let's remember the fact that the M8 revived the fortunes of Leica Camera AG and paved the way for the M9 and MM and M240 - and resultant development of some superb M lenses - the success of them all leading to the 'X' series and the 'T' - the wonderful 'X' series so underestimated by some but embraced and enjoyed by many.

The M8 was a landmark rangefinder camera and should be capable of many more years use - and is a bargain buy.
