v1.102 questions...

I initially posted this thread in the general digital forum....

I recently downloaded the new v.1.102 software and have two questions...

1. I noticed that you now have three options for LENS SELECTION, namely: ON, OFF, and ON+UV/IR. The accompanying software notice about the WATE is poorly worded... I assume, perhaps incorrectly that the lens selection option should always be on as it tells the M8 what lens you are using. But what about the ON+UV/IR option? Should this be on always or just when you use UV/IR filters? Does it matter if it is on and you are NOT using an UV/IR filter?

Furthermore, the notice states that there is a third window after the ON+UV?IR window, namely one that shows the three focal lengths for the WATE. I assume that this window ONLY appears if the WATE is attached to the M8 and NOT as a general rule as implied by Leica's notice. For those of you out there with a WATE, can you confirm that this third focal length secreen is seen selectively (ie only with the WATE attached) and not generally?

2. I use the Sandisk Extreme III 2GB cards as well as the Sandisk 512MB card initially supplied with the camera and noticed the following. On the extreme III 2GB cards, when I turn on the camera and am in say DNG mode, the file/image counter starts at the expected 187 and works its way down as you shoot... No surprise here. But when I use the 512 MB card, again in DNG mode, the file counter starts at 120 or something but after the first shot drops down to the expected 45. It seems that for the 512MB cards (and this happened on two of them) the file counter starts at the epected JPEG count and switches over to DNG after the first exposure wheras this was not seen on the 2GB cards (two of those.) I realize that this is probably a trivial issue as the photos came out very very well but has anyone else noted this?

Thanks as always,

Albert

Bad things happen when you ask for UV/IR correction but don't have the filter in place. The correction is mostly a shift in the red intensities to bring them up to the green levels in the outer parts of the image. You may see pink corners if you invoke this correction but don't need it. For an example go to http://www.leica-camera-user.com/leica-m8-forum/21587-results-we-want-see-results-1-a-4.html#post230732

which plots the actual numbers, or to an earlier posting in that thread, http://www.leica-camera-user.com/leica-m8-forum/21587-results-we-want-see-results-1-a-4.html[/url],

which shows the picture for a mild case.

sorry, this is now posted at both levels, and I answered above. If it continues, it should stay in the M8 forum, here.

Since we've now got two threads on the same topic (though with different numbers of periods in the titles and with the most prolific poster to both being the thread starter :)), might it not be best to combine the two?

Thanks.

Albert--

1a) As you surmise, because you only need to specify which focal length of the WATE you're using is when you're actually using it, that menu option is not available unless the WATE is on the camera.

1b) As Scott said, with the WATE and no UV/IR cut filter in place the camera's default correction is likely better than you would get from telling it that you are using a UV/IR filter. That would be most important with shorter focal lengths.

1c) Depending on what you shoot, it may not be that important anyway. Remember, a lot of people were pretty happy with M8 results before getting their filters. :) But again, the WATE is a new ball of wax and using the correct settings will be much more critical for good results.

2) I think this has been noted a couple times and is simply (for better or for worse) 'the way the M8 works.' In the case you mention, the camera doesn't update the frame counter as to how much room is left until after taking a picture. Interesting phenomenon. What if it hasn't enough room to write a file to the card in its current configuration? Possibly it doesn't notice until you've tried to do just that? Basically I don't think it makes much difference when the M8 updates the counter SO LONG AS the camera first checks the available space and doesn't allow you to shoot if the card hasn't enough room. But the behavior is confusing and needs clarification.
