Leica R8/9 and ROM lenses

Hello,

I have got a question I was wondering what the Leica R8/R9 do with ROM lenses. I can understand the use on the R8/9+DMR for EXIF data and possible afterwards with digital corrections.

But what does the R8/R9 do with ROM lenses when you are shooting film, I am asking because I'm in the process of buying a 80mm Summilux. And I am wondering why I should pay more for a ROM version, will I really benefit from it? I'm gonna use it on the R8 with film, and M240 with R-M adapter.

Thanks!

Hi

The ROM will tell the flash the focal lenght and actual aperture.

I am not sure, if the matrix measurement in the R8/9 usese also this information for correction of the automatic exposure setting...

Regards

Thanks Salvi,

I don't use flash with my R8 so I guess it's okay to just use non ROM lenses. I usually use spot metering anyway. :) or do it with a hand held light meter.

Apart from the transmission of focal length information, the ROM chip also tells the camera information about the aperture automatic diaphram dynamics of that particular individual lens sample. This enables the camera to tweak exactly when the shutter fires. (It's a fine tuning process though). Also, I'm pretty sure that in the early days of the DMR, Robert Stevens established that, even back then, lens information enabled the DMR to do some vignetting correction. The ROM chip also tells the camera what the working aperture is, rather than relying on the R cam to do this. This enables ROM extenders to relay to the camera the correctly scaled aperture information, which is useful. For example, when ROM lens is connected to an R8/9 via a 2x ROM extender, a setting of f/22 is displayed in the camera viewfinder as f/45.

Okay, so in the end a ROM lens would be better.

Now, what I notice is that lots of people convert their lenses to canon/Nikon mount. And they remove the ROM from the lens, I was wondering if anyone had a 80 lux rom laying around for me to put on my lens! Haha

It's only for use on Nikon cameras that the mounts need to be swapped as they can be fitted to a Canon body via an adaptor.

I doubt whether many people would sell the ROM only as they might one day want to reinstate the original mount.

Yes you're right, does Leica still install ROM contacts?

The summilux.net database puts the year of manufacture at 1970, but this is not always accurate. The SL was introduced (I think) in 1968, so this might suggest that it may well be a two cam lens. However, a further cam may have been added subsequently. You need to post a picture of the rear of the lens. But you can tell for yourself. Cams one and two are like chrome wedges in a circular arc, and the third R-cam is a black stepped device that moves with the aperture setting.

If you are going to mount it via an adapter on a Canon, it doesn't matter what cams it's got.

Brian Bower in Leica Reflex Photography reports it as being extremely good optically.
