Hi all Leica users, please help.

I am thinking of buying a Leica.

Which one i hear, the M9 hopefully, what do you think.

Which lense, a 35mm f1.4 Summilux as a start, what do you think of this as a first lense.

I have used many Nikons in the past but it has been years since I used a rangefinder camera

especially a Leica.

Would you buy off Ebay?

Which is a good Leica shop in the UK?

Would you buy from abroad like Hong Kong etc.

Thanks Tez:confused:

Welcome to the forum. An M9 is a good camera, the current version is the ME. Why do you want such a fast lens? There are many wonderful lenses to choose from. For a general purpose lens I would recommend a Summarit 35 or 50. After you have eased yourself into the system you can define your wants/needs and take it from there. Buy from a trusted dealer, especially if you plan to buy secondhand. The sponsoring shops on this forum can all be recommended.

Tez, welcome!

As a first time Leica buyer, why gamble on Ebay? You are the kind of buyer who gains most by consulting a trusted Leica dealer, who will know his subject, offer advice and a warranty and show you stock.

There are several good Leica dealers in UK. Where do you live? Or which city can you more easily visit?

I can highly recommend Red Dot Cameras in the UK. They're my main Leica dealer, I've bought a lot of used items from them and they offer the best service and prices in my opinion. Very friendly and helpful people.

The M9 is a great camera, but without knowing your budget, it's hard to suggest anything else? If you have more money to spend, the M (current model, Typ 240) may be better for you, if you're used to options such as live view an a slightly higher ISO performance. If you don't plan to shoot colour, the M Monochrom is an outstanding performer.

I would highly recommend the Zeiss 35mm f2 Biogon, if 35mm is the focal length you're set on, as an alternative to the 35 Lux. If you're flexible, then the pairing of Zeiss 50mm f2 Planar and 25mm f2.8 Biogon is exactly the go-to, 2 lens setup I use with my M9.

They may not be f1.4 lenses, but their excellent performance and biting sharpness (especially the 25mm) really shine on the M9. You'll get both and the 25mm viewfinder (not strictly needed on the M9) for less than the 35 Lux.

I would certainly not recommend ebay.
