blurred background using X-Vario?

My understanding is that there is 2 ways to achieve blurred background ( portrait ) is fast apertures f/2, f/1.4 or longer focal lengths being used such as 75mm.... but the X-Vario is limited to f/3.5 at 18mm ( 28mm equivalent ) and f/6.4 at 46mm ( 70 equivalent )

Is it possible to get blurred background when taking portraits with the X-Vario ? When I had my Nikon D600 + AF-S Nikkor 85mm, portraits with blurred background was no issue.

I was looking at the Leica T + Leica 23mm T lens but it looks like trade in value is now $1400 US - less than half of what camera was new ((((

I am happy with picture quality and analog controls is nice.

3 ways. Move in closer for more narrow DOF. If your DOF sucks you are not close enough.

And to make it even better, make sure there's plenty of space behind the subject..

so: lens wide open, at tele end of the zoom, subject close as possible, background far as possible.

I tried it. It appeared quite artificial to my eye.

Extensive practice is required to achieve a degree of expertise. It definitely works though clearly the final image is not as good as a Noctilux produced image. However, the Nocti is significantly more expensive, as you are well aware.

A gentle bokeh produced by occasionally using this software adds something to a too sharp, high DOF image.

I accept this is a personal view supplied by a chap with little photographic ability so it may be best to discard it. I have no loyalty to Alien Skin by the way.

Dan,

The only drawback to the XV for me is the difficulty getting good bokeh as you have posted. This is at 46mm (70mm equivalent) and at max aperture, which is f6.4. As stated earlier by jaapv, getting close will render some bokeh.
