I remove mine when it is finished charging -- but I don't sit by the charger. On occasion, I charge before going to bed and remove in the morning. I take it out, and wrap it in a small plastic baggie to keep it from accidental contact. Even though that does take slightly more space. If I were in an environment where sand blows all the time, I would definitely want this sort of barrier. However, plastic bags seal in moisture. You have to decide how much of that you want to have.
