stussy2k Posted April 29, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 29, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) On my "new" replacement ii(d) I noticed some thin layer of gunk/clear(?) varnish/residue as highlighted in the picture here. What is it? The upwards facing part of the top plate feels subtly tacky too, easily recepable to "scratches". The areas where it has "peeled" off, I can instead feel the smooth glossy paint. No intensions of removing this particular layer, but I just wonder what it is, and if anyone knows? Welcome, dear visitor! 250swb Posted May 1, 2014 Share #2 Posted May 1, 2014 Looks to me like somebody has in the past 'refreshed' the paintwork with a clearcoat of lacquer. Johnson's Klear floor lacquer is a restorers favourite for re-invigorating the depth of black in vulcanite for example. It hasn't bonded so is flaking off, the last remnants being around edges and details not normally handled. If it was only around the rear eyepiece I'd have said it might be nose grease etc. that had been 'set' into a skin by having a furniture polish applied over the top of it.
