Sabanek Posted April 27, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone had difficulty removing the lens hood that comes mounted on the Summilux-M 1.4 35mm aspherical lens? I just received my lens and cannot remove the hood. The instructions say just press the two catches and slide it off. It feels like it's glued on. I've e-mailed Leica and should have a response in a day or two, but in the meantime I thought I'd ask all of you if you've had a similar experience. rosuna Posted April 27, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 27, 2007 Be careful! Read this. I had the same problem. The instructions about the use of the hood in the small "Instructions" paper card included with the lens are wrong. This error was checked with Leica. They will correct the "Instructions" in future versions of the card. 1) The text in English is this (p. 11): "To fit the lens hood, place the white dot on the lens hood against the white index dot on the lens and push down". This is not true. The correct procedure is "To fit the lens hood, place the red vertical red arrow against the white index dot on the lens, press the two catches and push down. When the hood is placed, release the two catches and turn the hood's ring to the right following the direction of the horizontal red arrow". 2) Then, the original text says "To remove the lens hood, simply press the two catches and pull off the hood the lens". This is uncorrect as well. The correct instruction should be "To remove the lens hood, turn the hood's ring to the left and then press the two catches and pull off the hood from the lens." jaapv Posted April 27, 2007 Share #3 Posted April 27, 2007 And whilst you are at it, order hood 12549 (that is the chrome one, I don't know the black number) which is the very nifty screw-in hood of the Elmar-M 2.8/50, which is smaller, more effective (it has the right angle of view for the M8),better made, and a whole lot better looking. HetDraakje Posted April 27, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 27, 2007 The part hood 12549 is made for 39mm filter thread, and might fit the summicron but not the summilux. But having the cron myself, you gave me a good idea... Boen
gravastar Posted April 27, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 27, 2007 Another thing to watch is not to squeeze the release tabs too hard. If you do it distorts the circular aperture of the plastic hood and that makes it difficult to put on or remove. It's easier to squeeze the tabs if the plastic cap is removed first. Bob. wparsonsgisnet Posted April 27, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 27, 2007 Russell, on my hood, there is a ring in front with a right angle arrow on it. This arrow is supposed to show you how to mount and dismount the hood. For mounting, push the hood on and turn the ring to lock. For removal, reverse the process. I have since put this hood in the drawer. I bot metal hoods on eBay. These screw in, are inexpensive, and are METAL. You know, like a big, steel bumper on the car? Nice lens. Ruben, Thank you for your help. My problem was that I followed the Leica instructions! Russell

It's easy when you know how. I should have approached it more intuitively rather than following the (incorrect) instructions that came with the lens!
