Shootist Posted April 26, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted April 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm looking for the filter size of the Elmarit-M 135mm f/2.8 with eyes. I have some type of ring that came with the one I bought and it says series 7 (VII). Just what size is series 7.

robbegibson Posted April 26, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted April 26, 2007 The late ones came with 55mm threads. The earlier ones were series 7. I'm not sure where the cutoff was, but I think it was at the same time the knurling on the focusing ring changed. Â Robbe
doubice Posted April 26, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted April 26, 2007 Just what size is series 7. Â Series filters do not have threads, rather they are held in place by a retaining ring. If you unscew your 'Series VII' ring, you'll be able to put a Series VII filter on the lens and hold it in place by the ring. The filter size is referred to as Series VII, not by thread diameter, since the filter has no threads. Â The change from the Series VII to 55mm occured when the focusing mount was changed from scaloped to ribbed (IIRC)... Â Jan
ho_co Posted April 27, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted April 27, 2007 Ed-- Some people had trouble with the series filter retaining rings: The ring is obviously thin metal (aluminum, I think). So if you grab it firmly from both sides the way you might a jar lid, you can deform it slightly and cause it to bind. The harder you squeeze to get a grip, the harder it resists. Â It's easy to remove, though: Just pinch it with thumb and forefinger, both at the same side of the retaining ring, as if you were picking up a coin. That way you don't deform it and it unscrews easily. Â Or just press the front of the retaining ring against your palm and rotate the lens. Since you're not deforming the ring, again it unscrews easily. Â Probably not useful information, but just in case... Â Just get a series VII filter, drop it in place, remount the retaining ring and you're home free. Â --HC
Shootist Posted April 27, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted April 27, 2007 Thanks to all for the replies. I've measured the retaining ring and it is close to 55mm, actually the outside of the threads are 53.7972mm. So I ordered a B+W 55mm IR cut filter. Hopefully it will work. If not I'll use it on my 24 ASPH until Leica has the time to send me the free one I ordered. Â Not sure if I could get a series 7 IR cut filter. doubice Posted April 27, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted April 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ed, Â A 55mm filter will not fit into a Series VII thread. The Series VII is actually 54mm; you'll have to use your filter on the 24 Asph.... Â Excellent post by Howard - the retaining ring can be difficult to remove and the two methods described are the only way to do it without cursing..... Â All the best, Â Jan
finkaudio Posted April 27, 2007 Share #8  Posted April 27, 2007 Hi,  B&W makes the 486 as Series VII. Try German Ebay or Foto Hubbert. He can order everything as special order for no extra money.  Best regards  Karl-Heinz
gilles_lorin Posted April 27, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted April 27, 2007 Ed, there is IR/UV filter series 7 for sale on ebay right now. It is actually the only available IR/UV cut filter there...
jaapv Posted April 27, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted April 27, 2007 Just to complicate matters: Leica used to offer an upgrade service for filter sizes. Anumber of older series VII lenses have been upgraded to 55 mm. Alternately, one can order a 54 mm filter from B&W.
