ND filter or slower film?

Would it be good to get me a 2-stop ND filter when working in brighter conditions? so I can put the aperture more open? Really need it for my portraits.

Or would slower film be a better option?

If you like the look of a faster film, then I would stick to that film and use an ND filter. That gives you the option of having, in effect, variable ISO.
