I have no desire to convince you. Just explaining there are valid reasons for those that do.

You are right, though. tech wins. We have to do without smile recognition. It is really impossible to take a selfie with the MM....

HAHA, Ill take that as friendly facetiousness. You know I dont mean that kind of tech.

Hey, Im as keen on camera jewelery as the next GAS addict, but the fact is these digital tech have a lifespan and its not as long as a film camera, never will be. Film cameras can live many decades, who will be using their £8k MM in 60 years?

Ill doubt you can get batteries for the, they'll be shiny bricks.

I love to take photos with a rangefinder like the MP. Already had the lenses, so I just took the plunge and went for an M240. I'm not sure about you but in 60 years I'm either dead or blind.

I assume it will stay good for the next 5 years to come and in those years depreciation will probably less than my car. ;)

I could have gone the sensible way buying a Fuji but I haven't. Not feeling like having to build up a 4th camera system.

I might not be alive in 60 years but I hope some realtions will be that I could pass it on to.

Im just suggesting that the nature of digital cameras and their inherent short term lifespans makes it kinda hard for me to see how they can be worth this much when much cheaper offerings are there.

I do get the mystical red dot aura though.

Enjoy your M 240 ;)

*other brands than Fuji are available ;)

I imagine this is where a lot of the clamour for fuji to introduce a FF system comes from. Judging by Fuji's words though, and of course in the end they have to make money - I can't see a FF Fuji any time sure.

Yeah sure FF is technically better than APS-C but APS-C is pretty damn good now and most of these photos end up on Facebook. People use their phones where once they'd use a camera, its a tough market.

While Im here, it irks me no end that Leica lost the 'e' off the end of Monochrom(e)!

You can't lose something that wasn't there. It's not lost, you've added it. What irks me is ignorance towards native languages.

Thats what Leica want you to think, whilst we've dropped the colours, no one will miss a little 'e' off the end so it fits on the hotshoe :p

Matt, I'll be passing on a few lovely film cameras to the younger generation when time comes. The question remains if film still exists by then...

About the red dot aura, I guess it's like the Apple aura? It works for me, but I have to defend myself to people who don't own it themselves. At the same time you'll have people that are so much sucked into the brand, it makes me want to sell it all. :p

I think thats a good question with film, I suspect it will in some form or the other.

How about jpegs? I can't open freehand or quark files from 10 years ago, will jpegs be readable in 100 years?

I get the Apple comparison, Ive been using Macs since, well early 90s, never used a WinPC for any great length of time, so its what I know. Sure theyre more expensive at face value (or were) but a PC would be useless to me.

Whilst we now have covered my facetious comment re Monochrom(e) and the marketing value of being overtly german with the thoughts of reliability and build quality associated with that - M 240 - why '240'?

In the film world I can see how leica's are special but in the digital world, especially with their all in one even more ridiculously priced offerings and panasonic link ups I think they've devalued their brand.

Hmmmmm. What is it that makes the film Leicas special? It seems to be just a film box, with a shutter, lens mount and focus-zing mechanism. Seemingly little difference between that and countless other film cameras. Yet, they sell for an equally large premium over a 35mm film DSLR.

Sure its largely personal taste but given that a film camera will probably be 20years old already, theres a premium for build quality - which id hope the Leica would have.

I prefer RF focusing so that narrows the choices anyway. I have a couple of cheap RFs already.

Personal taste. Build quality. RF focusing. Some of the same reasons people pay a premium for a digital M. Not to mention that you don't have to shoot a lot of film on a regular basis to exceed the cost premium of a digital rangefinder (including film costs, developing, time, scanning)

I pay ~£7 per roll for developing & scanning 3000px wide (~$11) and £1 for a roll of agfa ($1.60) it'd take a few rolls to get to £6k - but I understand your point.

In all honesty, being forced by my M6 to change the way I shoot and also to use manual has I think helped me a lot. I understand the basis of exposure better now and I like that.

click click snap snap doesnt move me anymore.
