Weird rangefinder problem

Hello everybody,

I just received from Wetzlar my M8 and Noctilux 1.0 I sent for calibration because the Noctilux had back-focus.

At first sight the problem was still there.

But don't ask me why, I tried to turn the camera upside down and miracle: the Noctilux is perfectly calibrated at all distances.

I know it sounds very weird .

In other words, if I focus at let's say 3 meters with the camera upside down, the picture is sharp and if I focus at infinity the split image in the rangefinder is sharp;

but if I do the same with the camera in normal horizontal position, I have back-focus and at infinity the split image cannot superpose.

Cross-check, I focus at any distance with the camera upside down until the split image superpose, I turn the camera, and the split image doesn't superpose anymore and it asks me to focus further (and of course I would obtain the back-focus).

I asked three people to check this out and the three of them agree with me, so it's not my eyes nor my eyeglasses...

This only happens with the Noct.

Have you ever heard about such a thing? I'm confused...

Thanks for your answers and have a good day.

Alex

Which probably means that you tend to hold the camera in a way that your eye is not straight to the optical axis of the viewfinder, causing parallax. Try focusing using a magnifier, it forces your eye in line.

Hello Jaap,

thanks for your answer.

I thought about that and I tried to move and turn my eye around to find the good axis, but without success. And there's also that the other people I asked see the same thing as I do.

Anyway I will follow your advice as soon as I can grab a magnifier (just sold it...).

I found out this morning.

The front part of the Noctilux is a little loose. If I push it up with my hand, the focusing is perfect.

That's why it works with the camera upside down: because of its weight, the front part goes in place by itself.
