Chuck Hatcher Posted April 25, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a fancy Giottos Schott Glass LCD screen protector for my M8 on the recommendation of my dealer. I broke it while installing it. It is very thin and the edges stick out beyond the M8 screen, unsupported. I was pressing on it to make sure the adhesive had adhered and snapped off one corner, leaving gritty glass dust on the screen I was trying to protect. Even if I had managed to install it in one piece, I'm sure some day I would have bumped an edge against something and broken it. Sorry, but I can't recommend this product. If you do buy one, be careful with it!

carstenw Posted April 25, 2007 Share #3 Posted April 25, 2007 If you buy the ScreenPatronus protectors, make sure you check that they don't stick out over the edge. My first one laster two weeks and then came off. The second one I trimmed, and it is still on there in perfect shape.
photolandscape Posted April 25, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 25, 2007 Stick to screen protectors from screenpatronus.com I'd stick with screenpatronus.com if its screen protectors would stick to my LCD for more than a week before falling off. I have gone through 6 of them and have given up on their line.
Brett Cambern Posted April 25, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 25, 2007 FWIW I'm still on my first ScreenPatronus and I've had my camera since January. I also have Luigi's case which is a tight fit and yet I have not had any screen protector problems.
arget Posted April 25, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 25, 2007 I have had good success with "Hoodman" protector, have to trim them to fit, but they stick around and leave no residue on screen when removed
pascal_meheut Posted April 25, 2007 Share #7 Posted April 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I started with ScreenPatronus but they went away very easily especially as I store the M8 vertically in a small bag... On the advice of someone on this forum, I tried ShieldZone and I found it much better.
Cindy Flood Posted April 25, 2007 Share #8 Posted April 25, 2007 Carsten is giving good advice. My first Screen Patronus came right off in about 2 weeks. I have one on both my M8 and my XTi now. I found out that trimming the one for the M8 is the answer. It needs a slight adjustment on two sides. It is a little better to be just a tad too small than to allow it to stick out over the edge. I find this brand to be very clear. Once you have it installed, you won't know it is there. I highly recommend it. Be sure to have a clean screen before you start and don't touch it with your fingers. Use the enclosed card to smooth out any bubbles.
Shootist Posted April 25, 2007 Share #9 Posted April 25, 2007 I have tried 2 different makes of the plastic stick on protectors, Patronus and DuraSec, and neither work to well. I have given up on these brands or trying any others of this type. I never plan on selling my M8 so I could care less if the screen gets a scratch or 2 on it. I very rarely ever look at images on it. DaveB Posted April 26, 2007 Share #11 Posted April 26, 2007 I've been in the habit of rolling my own screen protectors using the Fellowes micro-thin screen protector material they sell for PDA's. It's cheap, durable, protects the screen and is easily removed and replaced. I just spent about 10 minutes trimming one to go on my new M8. Look great and if it gets scratched or snot encrusted I can just make a new one. I sold a Canon G3 on eBay a while back and it had the original screen protector I had put on it in 2002. It peeled right off, left no residue and the screen was pristeen. OK, a couple LCD pixels had died... In a perfect world the M8 would have that neat flip&rotate screen like the Canons. That would serve to protect it some and make it look even less conspicuously like a digital. I wish the M8 screen also was not so elevated above the level of the camera back. That seems like an invitation for scratches.
ejcaliguri@comcast.net Posted April 26, 2007 Share #12 Posted April 26, 2007 Chuck- Just to be sure - which 2.5 in. model Giotto did you use? There is a 'special' thin one for LCD panels that don't have an 'edge' and are supposed to be for the M8 I have 2 on order from my dealer - BUT there are 3 different ones - SP852, SP851 and SP850 ; You want the SP8250 for a 'shallow frame-less 2.5" screen' I was told, so I got one for my M8. The People at Giotto are supposed to be very helpful if you call. I will do that today. At $20 a pop (from B&H) these along with IR filters. WATE filter holders, and the like - thiese cameras are getting expensive to own before you even shoot a picture
Guest sirvine Posted April 26, 2007 Share #13 Posted April 26, 2007 I got fed up with screen protectors falling off, and have gone "naked" ever since. Although I use a Luigi case most of the time, there is not even the faintest hint of wear on the screen. This is a tough covering that Leica has on there. Chuck Hatcher Posted April 26, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted April 26, 2007 Chuck-Just to be sure - which 2.5 in. model Giotto did you use? There is a 'special' thin one for LCD panels that don't have an 'edge' and are supposed to be for the M8 I don't know what the model number was, and have already tossed it out. The clear area matched the size of the M8 display, though I suppose it would be possible to make one with less of a "border". The way it mounts is by adhesive under the black border, the clear part does not actually touch the LCD screen. The M8 has very little border around the active part of the display. It seems to me that the space between the thin, fragile glass protector and the LCD screen would make the protector vulnerable to a bump on the screen, but it was the border I broke on mine. cbretteville Posted April 26, 2007 Share #15 Posted April 26, 2007 Ordered a set from ScreenPatronus in January and the one I've used on my M8 is a perfect fit. I remember being impressed with it when put it on. I's stayed on since I got my M8 on Mach 6th and no indications of it peeling off. I did wash the screen with a wipe I use to clean my glasses before putting it on. - Carl

Where would I find the 3M screen protectors? 3M sounds like a good choice, as they have vast experience with static-cling and adhesive coated films. mr_big Posted April 26, 2007 Share #18 Posted April 26, 2007 I've tried lots of screen protectors and the best I've seen are the Invisible Shield protectors. I first used them on my iPods and cell phones. They are indestructable. I now have them on all of my digital cameras. They will not come off, period. For the M8, it's best to get the 3" diagonal and trim it down. The 2 1/2" is a bit too small.
