I don't have a M8, but want to know:

Does the M8 still requires the IR filter even with the latest firmware uploaded?

Or, all the new M8 shipped from the factory right now have the captioned problem solved already?

Thanks in advance.

The latest firmware is to correct for side effects of using UV/IR cut filter to get correct colors. The filters are still necessary. With a filter in place (espeically Leica's filter) things work very nicely.

Richard, IR sensitivity is a feature of the sensors in every digital camera. In the M8, a cover glass has been used that is thinner than that used in other digital cameras. Therefore it is passing more light from the IR end of the spectrum.

Firmware will not change this, and the thinner-than-usual cover glass was chosen on purpose.

The IR sensitivity is handled properly by adding IR-cut filters to the front of the lens. As you view the posts here, you can see that the IR problem has been addressed correctly by those who are using filters.

The newest firmware update (1.102) addresses the cyan corners of the images that result from rays of light passing at an oblique angle through the IR-cut filters to the corners of the image.

The images from this camera are magnificent. It's all about the lens.
