DNG+Jpg Fine

Check your import settings.

I have been looking to do the exact opposite - import the dng files only whilst leaving the jpg files on the card. On the general tab in lightroom, I have the "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" unchecked but the jpg files still come in anyway.

juju, you could un-check all the jpeg thumbnails in LR in preparing to import, then they wouldn't get imported. Or get tricky with LR and move the jpegs temporarily into a separate folder on your computer. Then LR doesn't see them or offer them for import. Then you can put them back if you wish.

This works well if you, like I, don't import with LR directly from the flash card... I copy the folder from the flash card to my computer, name it as I wish, and move it to my preferred permanent storage spot, THEN import into LR.

I got just the opposite. When that option was not checked, LR5.3 did not import the JPG, just the DNG.

I like this option:

Something must be wrong with my install then. Its unchecked but still imports all the jpgs. I wonder if some other setting is overriding this?

If you are on a Mac you could also use Automator to monitor your import folders and then move the jpg files somewhere else, for example a sub directory.

Another excellent idea. I am not an automator guru. Do you have a script you can share?
