Thoughts On The M After One Year's Use

Okay, I have to ask: Has anyone had problems with the Italian Flag Phenomenon as discussed in Leica Fotografie International issues 8/2013 and 1/2014?

I am thinking hard about biting the bullet and forking over the $6950 price of admission for an M240 - but I have to admit that this issue gives me pause.

I know that nothing made by human hands is perfect (Da Vinci's Pieta notwithstanding) but I would not expect this type of problem when you put a $4300 lens (Summicron 28 ASPH) on an almost $7000 camera body.

My concerns are magnified by the fact that my 28 'cron is my favorite and most used lens.

Am I being too critical? Isn't being critical and having very high expectations what we Leica shooters are known for? I would think that for $11,000+ expecting perfection from a camera and lens is a reasonable expectation; am I expecting too much? :confused:

Don’t go by forum posts. Rent one and try.

The first sentence here is typical of the BS that pigeon hole Leica owners as elitist snobs with too much time and money on their hands. It's our 'Brand' sigh......

And the second one confuses price, value, supply & demand, marketing, production etc... Perfection is an ideal, not a mechanical device. (Quite deep of me for a Saturday!).

Jaapv is right - Don't get wrapped up in the marketing, forget the forum nonsense and technical minutiae. There's never been a perfect camera that's all things to all (wo)men. Just get one, go shoot and enjoy your 'cron. :)

Mine will be perfect when rangefinders are directly linked to my visual cortex, so I never have to compensate for them, or miss another shot ;-)

I agree, nothing is perfect, including your art history reference.

Michelangelo sculpted the Pieta.

You are correct, sir. When I wrote that post at 2311 local last night, I was operating in a state of caffiene and sleep deficit, hence my muddle-headed thinking. Oops... :o

@jaapv and Reds,

I would love to rent an M and go shoot with it for a weekend, or even just an afternoon. I will have to check with Tamarkin in Chicago to see if that is possible. If so, it will be about a 4 to 4.5 hour road trip up there.
