Little help with the SF 24 at a wedding

Guy,

Did you have any occasions when the flash did not fire? I am finding that at times (usually the first time) the flash does not fire but on a subsequent shot it does. This is with the flash on TTL (GN) mode. Another thing I noticed is that with shutter set to auto there are times when you get the pre-flash and times you don't. I need to play with it more. I also notice that the flash seems at least one stop high and I need to stop down the lens one stop to keep from washing out the image. (I was using the Leica Goodies Sfill.

Dear Guy—hello there

My friend, the fill was a stop or so under—no? may I suggest 1/3–2/3 EV under? I agree with stanmi: that shadow is a bit 'in your face'.

I don't use an M8, so not sure if this is possible with it, but in bright sun, -1/3 Ev on the fill (which sounds like too much), and assuming a Sto-fen or the Lightsphere, is just right. YMMV, of course. And you had had a few!

Cheers, kit

That is possible. The flash output can be corrected in 1/3 steps on the flash, the overall exposure on the camera. I happen to like the way Guy did it. I think the fill-in would have become too obvious, giving an unnatural look, when used more prominentely.

Jaap, it's a matter of taste. -1/3 EV under those conditions (light that's probably stronger than you have shot in, unless you shoot in Phoenix or Australia) would still have shown the shadow, just not as strongly. As the old saying has it, "de gustibus non est disputandum". I think the image would look better with the shadow less dark. Having the shadow there works, IMO. Cheers, kl

I am missing something here. The shadows are in different locations, different extents. It is the bods we are looking at.

I mean you arent going to change the golf course's exposure with a flash, so you can discount the background entirely.

Image quality wise, I kind of figure the first image might be photoshop saveable if you had belted in more flash? The others I dont know.

How did they print?

Interested in your comments, bacause I am intersted in the 24sf

Regards

  • 3 months later...

I'm confronted with a wedding coming Thursday and am planning to bring my M7 with 50mm Elmar and 90mm Cron.

I think I'll have some serious problems in terms of too less light... so what flashgun would suit me best? SF24?

I have never used a flash on my Leica cameras, so I don't know what to expect or what I should look for.

btw. I'm not a pro and just want to get some nice shots of the wedding, my sister in law asked me to. So I want to get some decent photos, I don't wanna screw up :)
