Fuji X-T1

I tested 4 of my M lenses (21sem, 35cron asph, 50lux asph and 90 elm) all performed quite well using the Fuji M adapter on the XT-1. Minor smearing observed with the 21 sem.

What I find most compelling is the Fuji M Adapter as you can dial-in correction info (distortion, color shading and peripheral illumination) on as many as 5 M lenses. :)

Assuming the XT-1 sensor performs as well as the Xpro, which imho it does if not exceed, then the use of M lenses with the Fuji adapter and XT-1 is a nice backup to the M240.

See attached link for examples of testing with UWA and WA:

Light isn't water or dust... The light leak occurs in bright conditions when the port is open to accommodate a remote cable release. Fuji to their credit have already acknowledged the problem and are doing foc rectifications under warranty, with an expected turnaround of a week to ten days. It only affects an early batch of bodies and has been rectified already in production. That's how to handle an issue...

It's a great camera but isn't it supposed to be water and dust proof?!!

Whether there’s a light leak has nothing to do with the camera being water and dust proof – you only get a light leak (with an early batch of the X-T1) when the port door is open, and in that case the camera isn’t water- or dust-proof anyway – it is the port door that seals the camera against water and dust.

Fuji have always been quick to rectify known faults. I am a long time Fuji fan having owned both Fuji X100 and XPro1. I would still have the X-T1 in a flash if the available range of long lenses were available and/or lighter! They are a very customer friendly company and in my opinion by far the most customer responsive camera manufacturer out there.:)

...or a potentially self-destructing sensor....

For the sake of pedantry, the X-T1 is not waterproof or dustproof. It is 'sealed' in a few places, which adds a bit more marketing potential to an already good camera.

I got my X-T1 some days ago and, gentlemen, I must admit that I am totally amazed by that little cam!

As far as I can say at the moment this is the best digital cam I have ever used.

Following a line of Nikon D1, Fuji S1Pro, S2Pro, Canon EOS 350D, 40D, 5D, Pentax K100D, Leica M8, Nikon D3100, Nikon1 V1 and Fuji X-E1, the X-T1 tops them all.

I have sold most of those cams meanwhile, but the set of

  • Fuji X-T1
  • Fuji X-E1
  • Leica M8

with some nice lenses gives me all that I need.

I did get the XT-1 and the Fuji M adaptor. I was also very impressed the first few days that I used it. However, after a few days of comparing images and struggling with the auto-focus, I became less enamored.

I bought it not to replace my M, but as a potential replacement for my Nex 6 because I believe the Fuji has a better lens selection and better build quality and I expected the IQ to be noticeably better given it has no AA filter.

After days of eye-bleeding pixel peeping, I concluded that the XT-1 IQ doesn't compete with the M. And using the same lens (a 50mm Summilux) to compare, the IQ is about the same as the Nex.

The main problem I had with the Fuji was that its auto-focus was not as good as the Nex and, I really could not rely on it for any object moving faster than my 80 year old mother. I know they talk about the improvements in the XT-1 auto focus, but it is not close at all to DSLR performance (I know that's not a fair comparison - although some in other forums are comparing it to DSLR auto-focus), but it's not even as good as the 2 year old Nex 6 technology.

So, although I really liked the ergonomics, lens selections, build quality, I just couldn't justify spending $1,200 (plus start a new collection of lenses) to replace the Nex. So, back it went to B&H last week.

Most strange. I find it like greased weasel shit. Which lens? Some are notably slower than others.

Bill,

It was the 18-55 zoom lens. An ok lens, but not exceptional IMO. I strongly considered returning the lens and getting the 23 mm which I know to be a very good lens (I have used on an x Pro 1), but then I don't have the convenience of the zoom.

As I said, I think it is a fine camera and I really wanted it to work for me, but I didn't think it was enough of an improvement over the Nex to justify the price. I'll take another look at Fuji when (if?) an X Pro 2 is released.

Another frustration I had with the camera was that I found the shadows didn't hold detail well. This may be due to my lack of experience in PP with the X Trans filed... Or perhaps I am spoiled with the M9/M files and the ability to pull detail out of shadows. But I struggled with that also. Just wondering if you find the same thing and how you handle the PP in that regard.
