MarkP Posted February 8, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted February 8, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm interested in whether most owners are using the camera Zombie style (like a P&S) or with the EVF. The camera is interesting as a 'Leica Lite' alternative when I don't want to take an M camera with me but there's no way I can do that Zombie thing. Advertisement Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Hi MarkP, Take a look here X Vario - Zombie or EVF?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted February 8, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted February 8, 2014 Mark, viewing is flexible.. Choose which suits you best. Indoors I find myself resting the camera on a chair arm and getting some lovely candid family pictures. On the road the EVF comes into its own and, while older technology, is perfectly usable and effective. It should meet your objectives.
waloszek Posted February 8, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted February 8, 2014 I primarily use the EVF for taking photos, but, of course, there are exceptions to this rule (as the motif requires...). With the EVF, I need not put on glasses, but there are also other advantages (better stability, larger image size, details are easier to see -- at least for me). I fairly often use the EVF 90 degrees tilted and look into the viewfinder from above. It's less stable, but I like it for landscapes and nature motifs. It's also more candid, as I found out... Best regards, Gerd
MarkP Posted February 8, 2014 Author Share #4 Â Posted February 8, 2014 I was previously put off by the cropped sensor and slow lens but this camera is clearly capable of producing quite extraordinary files. Â That the EVF 2 is older technology doesn't bother me that much as I have no major complaints with it on the M240 but I only use it occasionally on that camera. It's more that the EVF on the X Vario compromises it as a more compact camera and I would almost only use the camera with the EVF. Now that I'm in my 50s and need reading glasses I really don't want to work off the screen on the back of a camera. Â Such a shame Leica didn't build in a viewfinder - I mean they even managed to get an EVF into the Leica C! It will be interesting to see what they do with the Type T with respect to size, probable internal viewfinder, lens size and quality. Â Nevertheless I may now go and have a play with an XVario. Runningmatt Posted February 8, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted February 8, 2014 I find myslelf using the EVF for the majority of the time - it just feels right. It does add extra, unwanted bulk, though. There are times when I do not use the EVF though: when using a flash on the hotshoe (obviously) and in awkward positions where I cannot get the angle of the camera while it is against my face (e.g. taking candid shots of my kitten on my lap!) The 90 degree tilt of the EVF is brilliant for taking shots from the camera while it is close to the ground, if you like that sort of thing!

When using my EVF I intuitively started using it at a 45° angle, especialy for slower and more deliberate work and framing - 'it just feels right'. thighslapper Posted February 13, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted February 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) EVF is only an issue when it comes to sticking the camera in a bag ...... otherwise it stays on the camera all the time ..... except when the M comes out for WA usage when it gets pinched. Makes using this little camera a real pleasure.......
