Will Fison fit over A36 lens Filter?

Recommended Posts

Yes, John - the FISON will clamp onto your A36 filters same way as the filters clamp onto the lens.

Using A36 filters on a 50mm Elmar presents a small problem though - the filter has to be removed when you change the f-stop. There used to be a VOOLA adapter, which would sit inside an A36 filter or FISON hood, flush against the f-stop nib. By turning the filter of hood you were than able to change the f-stop. Somewhat fiddly and not particularly safe, because the whole combination could be lost easily - it had to be rather loosely clamped to the lens, otherwise it was impossible to turn the VOOLA.

Another possibility is the VALOO shade - interestingly, originally designed the Elmar 50mm lens when it was mounted on an enlarger. In effect it is a combination of the FISON and the VOOLA, in one solid piece. Clamp it on the 50mm Elmar, line-up the f-stop follower and change the f-stops by turning a ring at the front of the VALOO. Will not work with A36 filters though.....

Welcome to the Leica world.....

Cheers,

Jan

...

If I use an a36 filter and/ or a36 clamp on filter on the Elmar does anyone know whether the Fison will fit on the end of the filter?

...

With the 36mm clamp-on filter on your lens it is not possible to fix a Fison as well - either or.

The only filter+sunshade-solution for the old Elmar is using small 19mm-filters, which can be screwed in just in front of the optical element - but are difficult to find.

Sorry, I'd better not write before looking properly at the items:

Doubice is right, and I was wrong!

The A36-clamp filter has an elevated rim where you can fix the Fison by it's own clamp:

While you were looking and taking photos, I did the same and may as well post them... ;)

Images of Leica I with Elmar 50, A36 filter and FISON. Another photo, for John's information only, of a IIIf with Elmar 50 and VALOO shade.

The VALOO will fit the Elmar 90 physically but, its main feature - f-stop coupling, will of course not work because it is designed for the aperture of the Elmar 50 only. Additionally, it will vignette rather severly on the '90', because the side that sits against the lens has the same diameter as the '50'.

So - a simple answer, no it is not suitable for the Elmar 90..... FISON is the way to go.

Jan, do you agree that the VALOO was made for using ELMAR on VALOY enlarger to see the aperture setting and not as a shade for use on a camera ?

VOOLA is usually the ring used for aperture setting on ELMAR with FISON hood.

J.C.,

Quote from my original post: ...."Another possibility is the VALOO shade - interestingly, originally designed for the Elmar 50mm lens when it was mounted on an enlarger. In effect it is a combination of the FISON and the VOOLA, in one solid piece"......

Yes, the VALOO was originally meant to be used with Elmar 50, when it was mounted on a Valoy. The idea was not necessarily that you could see the aperture setting (a little difficult in the darkroom.....) - the VALOO had click stops for tactile feel, just like regular enlarging lenses. Two clicks = f:5.6, three clicks = f:8 etc.

It sure beats the FISON / VOOLA combination in regular 'non-darkroom' use! :)

Cheers,

Jan
