Sileem Posted January 29, 2014 Share #1  Posted January 29, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi  Was just wondering why the starter set comes only with 50mm lens? 35mm summicron looks like good alternative.  I do prefer the pull-out metal hood and dislike the plastic hood of 35mm cron.  But for the first lens, i would go with 35mm 2.0, and later add the 35mm lux that has the metal hood. Guest Marc G. Posted January 29, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted January 29, 2014 i think it is just a traditional set. 50mm has historically been the standard lens and the 50mm Summicron is a living legend. It makes perfect sense to me.
TomB_tx Posted January 29, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted January 29, 2014 Back in 1959 the Leica catalog had part numbers just the body or for the M3 the kit with any of the 4 50mm lenses, and the M2 with any of the 3 35mm or any of the 50mm lenses. By 1968 they still offered the M2 with either FL, but the new M4 had kits only with the 50s, and the same was true with the M5 in 1972. I know they pushed the M2 as the wide-angle Leica alternative to the M3. They likely found that most buyers of the kits were new to photography, and usually bought a 50. Today, of course, the 50 Summicron is much cheaper than a 35 version, so may avoid the sticker shock of other kits.
