Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 22, 2007 Share #21 Posted April 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have to disagree , every comment that was made by the orginal OP has been discussed for 6 months . There are stickie threads that cover almost every known bug and issues the M8 has come across. Frankly they may be questions to ask as legitimate but it is also apparent that one does not look around and read threads already established and is not using the search button. To me that is the biggest sin i see all the time on other forums is repetitive questions on the same topic because someone maybe too lazy to use a search feature. This is a busy place and as most of you know folks here like to read most threads and help, guide and add to threads but after awhile of repeating the same answer and seeing the same questions is when you start to see a great forum go to hell in a handbasket and good folks leave because it gets boring. Also it is called whining to perfectly blunt , frankly most of us are tired of it and i will answer for the forum at large here if someone runs into a issue than we all jump and try to help. That is something what a great forum does but to hear the i hate Leica chant everyday is something i honestly think we are a little tired of and seems on the childish side and the biggest issue it is not productive. So if someone takes offense to my comment sorry but this stuff just gives you a headache. it's a 1000 word rebuttal that makes no sense and sounds like trolling to me. There are a lot of great folks here let's not lose them to this always not happy threads that only cause disention among the troops because it really serves no purpose. Bottom line the world is filled with unhappiness about something does it always have to be public , maybe it's me but i like to look at the sunny side of things and the other stuff is just depressing. Just a thought and as they say YMMV

hankg Posted April 22, 2007 Share #23 Posted April 22, 2007 What is the point of going on about what the beta-testers should have seen or why Leica didn't realize the impact of the IR issue. It's all idle speculation and has been re-hashed a 1000 times. It's one thing to discuss the advantages or drawbacks of adding some feature to a future firmware release or discuss the future direction of the system. But provacative language about the motivations or competance of Leica or individual forum members serves no purpose but to provoke flame wars. So I agree with Guy and Andy on the subject of this thread.
george + Posted April 22, 2007 Share #24 Posted April 22, 2007 Msadat wrote " it seems very much to me that leica has under estimated their current customers and their skill set in using tools like M8....... my guess is leica was counting on old farts who can't see and shoot to use the new tool; all the sudden people (in masses) are questioning the quality of M8, focus accuracy and taking matters in their hands (hex!!!) trying to fix what leica should have gotten right. i have gone through a lot of digital cameras, including the contax ND and the rest of canon and nikon high end. all have had some issues (minor) but quickly fixed. so far, this has been the hardest to grasp. i had to find the hard way about the filters, firmware issues, focus issues and now the fact the leica IR filters (4 months later) is formulated different than BW (the most popular) I am not getting their marketing strategies and direction... this is slow death.... at some point they need to come clean or else they are history....leica is now owned by one person, i really wish he has a direct line to this forum; so he can filter out what is good & important and put the good use PS ....." unquote ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I, ugh, must be one of these old farts you so sweetly refer to. Being one of them of course includes having used Leicas well before your parents met and also includes being familiar with rangefinders and being capable of handling the odd challenge without watering all over the place. Leica did have a few problems, which - considering their size - they are handling well - if not in the smoothest manner. But I rather have them do it well than listen to a marketing story. As to the filters, it was not a happy scene but they are getting their act together. And they likely chose a different filter because that was what their sensor required. And if you consider that they needed well over ten thousand of these in different sizes that should give you a better appreciation of the challenge being tackled. I am not about to comment on your "inability" to get their marketing strategies. It is not easy. But what you percieve as slow death is often better than a fast one. And more curable too. As to your suggestion that Leica's "one" owner read our postings, I hope he is not getting the wrong impression. :)
Guest sirvine Posted April 22, 2007 Share #25 Posted April 22, 2007 The IR cut filter "issue" is really not a big deal to anyone who understands it. The toughest part is hand coding non-Leica lenses below 50mm to eliminate cyan drift, and the average 10 year old could manage that little project. I shot with a Heliopan cut filter on my cron 50 for months, and got more than acceptable results, despite Heliopan being less than ideal for this application. Basically: 1. Buy filter 2. Put it on 3. Handcode non-Leica lens below 50mm Not exactly the end of the world.

Guest tummydoc Posted April 23, 2007 Share #27 Posted April 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I shot with a Heliopan cut filter on my cron 50 for months, and got more than acceptable results, despite Heliopan being less than ideal for this application. I must politely disagree with the last statement. The Heliopan may not be ideal with the firmware cyan correction (but in my experience no filter including Leica's will be in all lighting) but it is entirely competent in removing the IR effects and most importantly I've found (as have some others) that the Heliopans are less prone to reflections and flare. Myself I would rather have to do an occasional minor Panotools tweak to optimise the cyan correction, than to spend time cloning out ghost spots. And overall flare is hard if not impossible to correct.
