rafael_macia Posted January 19, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have to tried to research this but have failed to find any convincing answers. In the past I have used external battery packs for flash work with the indestructible Vivitar 283 and Armato and Quantum external battery packs. I would use the remote sensor cord to keep the sensor on camera and have the flash itself off camera. Worked well. Now shooting with a 240 and an M9P, I would like to be able to use the SF 58, (which I am thinking of buying ), for magazine flash work. But I need fast recycle. Will Turbo batteries work with the SF 58? I have used the Turbo on a 283 on the 240 in non TTL mode. Seemed to be fine. Any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks ! NikonJeff Posted January 21, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 21, 2014 You might wish to contact Metz and see if the power pack intended for the Metz 58-AF2 will work with the Leica SF-58 as I believe they are basically the same flash. The P-76 provides faster recycling and I think it would be safer for the flashes electronics. According to Metz's website the following is used with the 58-AF2… "High performance Metz NiMH power pack P76 with V58-50 cable". Jeff
wparsonsgisnet Posted January 25, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 25, 2014 I use the Metz 58 with the Turbo 2X2. In A(uto) mode, everything works perfectly. You give up the exposure linkage with the Leica that the other flash gives, but I can't speak to that. I get about 700-800 shots with this rig at a wedding. I keep another 2X2 and a Metz 54 as backup.

There is apparently a difference between the Metz 58 and the Leica SF58, even though the Leica branded unit is made, I understand, by Metz. I've been unable to use my SF-58 with either of my Quantum battery packs. Both Quantum and Metz have told me I can't do it. Its been a while since I checked but my memory is Metz told me I could use the Metz P76 battery pack with the appropriate cord. I never tried that. If you have updated information on this subject I'd appreciate your posting it. --Bob
rafael_macia Posted January 31, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted January 31, 2014 Yes I had heard similar things. Although they appear identical, they are not. In short I think the difference .... between the two flashes .... is that TTL is fine with the SF58, but not with the Metz 58. Turbo batteries I find out now from you .... (and thank you for that !) ...is not good with the SF58 but works fine, (as Bill P says above), with the Metz 58. I may just give up my 283's Ha ! thanks!!
