Douglas Sharp Posted January 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All, According to Laney et al, production of screw mount collapsible Elmar 50s ceased in 1962 and all subsequent lenses of this type were made with bayonet mount. The number of the screw mount Elmar on my IIIg (from 1960), however, places it in 1966. The lens has a dual scale metres/feet and the front ring reads Elmar 1:2.8/50 Leitz Wetzlar and the number 2162xxx. The lenses appear to be multicoated Would this be a one-off (perhaps a special order), or were these lenses actually produced in screw mount up until 1966? Would appreciate any information. Cheers Douglas

luigi bertolotti Posted January 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 16, 2014 The meter+feet scale is normal for an item with a s/n of 1966 (was introduced in 1965) ; the screw mount is an oddity... as you say, probably a special order : other similar occurencies are known, because LTM Leicas were very appreciated and used cameras even when M Leicas were on the market from years .It could be also a factory rebuilt... or even a 3rd party re-machining... but in those cases one had to find the small receptacle for the red dot for BM aligning. Anyway... if you look at our Wiki section, you can notice that the batch of lenses with 2.162.xxx is not specified as a "M" batch (differently from others of the same era).... can be that someone has tracked those exceptions : is surely, anyway, an interesting item for collectors : can you provide some pictures of it ? They are alway appreciated in this section of the Forum.
