I have a black Elmar 9 cm f/4 lens, s/n 211xxx, that I picked up a bunch of years ago that came with a sunshade that I can't identify.

Hold on, no it's not your usual clamp on type such as the FIKUS or FISON, this is a slip on sun shade that has Leitz Wetzlar in raised letters not unlike the early cameras, which isn't surprising since this lens was probably made in 1934. It slips onto the front of the lens and the lens cap slips onto it.

Anyhow, although I'm very familiar with the old gear, and have plenty of reference books, this sun shade, as simple as it is, I don't know what it was called/cataloged as and would appreciate if anyone knows.

Many thanks!

Can you post a picture of your item ? From what you say, it is of the same breed as the hoods for Elmar 10,5 cm and Hektor 7,3 cm... no clamping screw and (I think) felt stripe along the inner diameter which slips onto the lens, and cap to be mounted on the hood; but those hoods (which I have) have the Leitz writing not on the hood in itself, but only on their caps. I don't remember to have seen hoods for Elmar 9cm other than FIKUS...

Unless... are you sure it is of the length for 9cm ? It could otherwise be a very old FISON (made for 5cm lenses) which at its first times was made without clamp screw, and some variants do bear the Leitz writing... it probably accepts a std. cap onto.
