rramesh Posted January 8, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 8, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Out of curiosity I wonder if anyone took pictures at those really low temperatures in the US with the new M and did the camera survive such low temperatures without freezing up? Advertisement Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Hi rramesh, Take a look here M and the Polar Vortex. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AlanJW Posted January 8, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 8, 2014 Yes, but 15 minutes is not a good test. The coldest was January 4 when I woke up to -0.8 F. Outside with the camera it was single digits. All was fine with the camera, but with 15 minutes warmed in my hands I did not expect problems. Those temperatures wreak havoc on anything mechanical but it takes some time for things literally to freeze (my car did start ). I'd be interested to know if anyone ventured out for 2 or 3 hours with an M. In NY we are not used to such extreme lows and no way did I want to be outside if I didn't have to be outside. Yesterday was about 4F. Today it is about 8.
dugby Posted January 9, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 9, 2014 Well down here in Perth on the edge of the Polar Vortex, we are only 18,718 km from NYC. my M240 had it's first freeze/lockup yesterday after 15mins use and it was +30C. Usually is +35C to +43C (expected in 2 days... when the Polar Vortex effect lessens)
RITskellar Posted January 9, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 9, 2014 Well, I walked with my camera around my neck for about a half hour during the -15 F temps (not including windchill) and did snap a couple shots. Camera was fine, though like stated earlier, this time is probably too short to be meaningful. The real problem wasn't the camera, it was my hands. I didn't want to take them out of my pockets.
