I always think that is a female thing, as even in cars, they seem to want to clutter the footwells with hand bags, brief case, shopping bags, tissue boxes, old pens, CD cases, loose CD’s, etc etc. I have various leg prostheses and I need every inch of leg room to stretch out. I have now said to myself that if I can’t afford business class for any flight over 4 hours, I just won’t go. Wilson

Will take just the M 240, two lenses, a few large capacity SD cards, an iPad camera connector and a full-size 64GB iPad with SIM card that has about 30GB of free space. Should actually work reasonably well, at least for a short trip.
algrove Posted January 10, 2014 Share #24 Posted January 10, 2014 Both of my SSD 480GB backup drives in OWC plastic cases weigh 326 grams. If you were to take only one, then 163 grams might weigh less than other backup storage devices.

I assume the former, as as far as I know Thunderbolt SSD in the configuration you're talking about is not yet available. If I'm wrong, would like to know, Thanks

thighslapper Posted January 14, 2014 Share #27 Posted January 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) another short term option is using an Eye-fi card and sending images to your mobile phone from the M ...... I do this with my Samsung which has a 64gb card plus a bit more on board. the transfer works very fast compared to computer/ipad and you could having running continuously so the card is mirrored on the phone within seconds .... thighslapper Posted January 14, 2014 Share #29 Posted January 14, 2014 Are these Eye-fi cards reliable? Thus far I've stayed away from them due to a fair bit of internet criticism. Mine have been ...... the 16gb Eye-fi pro is the fastest card I have used on the M ..... presumably as it needs to have a beefed up processor to cope with wi-fi. Performance is depressingly slow on my mac for wireless transfer ..... but really quick with my mobile phone. The computer interface is a bit useless....... the card does not recognise that images already exist and slavishly re-transfers and overwrites them. Taking photos with a mobile in your pocket it transfers as you go and you don't notice it. If data transfer costs/limits weren't so high in the UK and my internet connection so appallingly slow then automatic card -> mobile -> cloud/dropbox -> PC would be a great idea ..... Richardgb Posted January 17, 2014 Share #30 Posted January 17, 2014 One weight-saving option I've used is not to take any computer in my luggage. Instead I seek internet cafés, which as a sign of the times has been revealing: In Germany, these are still relatively common, usually around railway stations - the more multicultural and interesting quarter you might say. Britain, though, is losing the plot - plenty of WiFi, but that's only good of you've got a smartphone or computer / pad (i.e. you've taken Apple or Samsung's shilling). Internet cafés need some searching - seemingly (as in Germany) in the more ethnically diverse neighbourhoods. In Hong Kong, Pacific Coffee often has a proper computer available for its customers' use. An internet café, card reader, and portable hard-disk would suffice for back-up. wlaidlaw Posted January 17, 2014 Author Share #31 Posted January 17, 2014 When I went to Vietnam a few years ago and only took a Mk1 iPad, which I soon filled up, I tried exactly this method using a Lindy 2.5” SATA mini drive. I found that many of the internet cafes had blocked or locked off their USB ports. When you asked if they could unlock one for you, suddenly their English or French, which seemed fine when you were paying them, had disappeared. I found the hotels were more helpful.
