Codeman Posted December 26, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted December 26, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys, curious if you have had a similar situation or can help? Â I have a Leica M (240). I bought a Novoflex adapter to use a R lens. I bought a 180 mm f2.8 and a Leica APO Extender 2X. I would like to leave my canon slr at home when I am taking tele landscape shots. I use a 5D mark 3 and the 100-400 for some landscape. I would like to sell it if I can get sharp tele shots on the Leica M. Â So putting on the novoflex adapter and the R lens fits fine. When I try to focus to infinity or on far objects I run into hurdles. On the 180 R lens it has the focus distance markings 6 to 100 feet and infinity. It will not focus beyond infinity. At an f2.8 it will focus to 100 feet and then the background will drop into bokeh. At f22 it will do the same.... just not as large a bokeh. Â Â any suggestions? ? ? Is this a lens limitation or a limitation with the adapter? It will do this with or without the 2X convertor. Â What I want to accomplish is isolating mountains and mountain landscapes. Long tele really compresses things and can make for beautiful images. I can take great wide angle shots with the M no worries. Â I took this one at 235mm with the Canon. 500px / Snow Capped Mountain by Cody Priebe500px / Snow Capped Mountain by Cody Priebe

jaapv Posted December 26, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted December 26, 2013 I think the adapter may be faulty.
algrove Posted December 26, 2013 Share #5 Â Posted December 26, 2013 My setup works just fine and it's the same as yours. Assume it's not a ROM /3 CAM issue since if it fits and locks in place I have no answer.
ModernMan Posted December 27, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted December 27, 2013 The couple of Novoflex LEM-LER adapters that I have measured were couple of hundredths of a millimeter on the thin side, meaning that they would permit focussing slightly *past* infinity. Â Nominal thickness of an M to R adapter is 19.2mm. A little less is ok, but any greater and it will not generally permit infinity focus. (An exception arises for longer Leica R lenses which were designed to allow focus past infinity to allow for thermal expansion.) You can try measuring your adapter with a precision caliper or micrometer to see if its a reasonable dimension (19.15 - 19.2 would be ok I think). See Flange focal distance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for nominal film-plane to flange distances. Â If the adapter is within tolerance, then the lens could be out of calibration. I'm not sure on that particular lens, but there may be shims behind the flange to adjust infinity focus. The flange screws may need gentle tightening.
