Are there any filmmakers who have used the M240 to shoot video? I am especially interested in your experiences with audio. Any solutions to getting high quality audio while shooting Leica's HD video, that's what I'm beginning to think about. And other other filmmaker experiences of note with the 240. Just wondering...

The sound recorder in the camera is better than I expected but it will not give you high quality sound. Buying the external mic (Leica or Olympus) will not improve things much.

For high quality, you need to use the camera to record the images and you need a separate sound recorder and decent microphone to record the sound. If you need to sync the images and sound (e.g. lip sync), the easiest way is to use a slate at the beginning of each shot. Also, you can look into synchronisation software called PluralEyes.

The set-up used in the Xanthopoulos film (see Jaap's links) is roughly what you want in terms of components, but they were using very high end gear (especially the four channel, Time Code capable Sonosax recorder) that you really don't need.

If you want to say what kind of sounds you want to record and under what conditions (indoors/outoors/windy or not), I'd be happy to make some comments on choice of recorder and mic(s).

Cheers

I would like audio good enough for broadcast video. Sync. The clapper board is just like the old days in film. Currently, I have Sony XDCM-1 which I have not used a long while, and it produces very good audio as well as video. But I would love to use the leica. I will have to research a quality but not too expensive digital recorder. I have a variety of mikes and cables.

this is a link to a film I shot a decade ago on DVCam (pre-HD). Rough and ready style:
