Weird battery problem… M9 vs MM

I was given a genuine Leica battery from a friend that just sold his M9 and a bit odd thing is occurring… The battery is about a year old and was one of three used for 14k actuations.

M9 M9 (1.176 FW) initially registered it as low battery but after leaving it in the camera it registers the battery power and such "correctly".

On my MM (1.002 FW) it keeps saying "low battery" no matter how long I leave it in the camera…

Thoughts? Ideas? Anyone else have a similar issue?

Thanks,

Jeff

M9's firmware 1.176 is older and less accurate in assessing a battery's charge and condition than M Monochrom's firmware 1.002.

Re-charge the battery and start using it—then the issue should go away after one or two cycles.

I've recharged it a couple of times - with the MM I get the same result. I'll run it down in the M9 and see if it "resets" itself. Great suggestion - thank you!

Maybe the battery was shorted at some point, or maybe it's a lemon (not very frequent, but happens to batteries as well, not just lenses or cameras).

FWIW, I have several of those batteries. A couple of them date back to my first M8 - and all are still going strong.

Nope - ran it down on the M9 until I saw "Warning Low Battery", recharged it to no avail.

:(

That was too soon. Try running it down even further, until the "Warning Low Battery" message disappears (i.e. until the camera is really dead). Then recharge and repeat procedure several times (I once had to do this 5x until the battery worked again).

You are right, it needs to be completely drained.

5 times? Interesting info. Thanks.

I'd have thrown in the towel after 2, maybe 3 attempts.

+1

Run down further by displaying an image while "Auto power off" is set to Off". Eventually the camera will display nothing.

My advice is "don't give up" and when the low battery warning still appears following your efforts at charging, try pressing the "Set" button followed by "Info" button. Miraculously, a full charge indication can appear. It does for me!
