paulsydaus Posted December 4, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 4, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I dropped my camera :-( It was inside my Billingham bag, but the bag flipped over and I never secured the padding on the top section properly. This is a hard lesson learned. From now on I will use the Velcro inserts to make sure there are absolutely no gaps on the lid when packing away the camera. Compounding the matter, I didn't have the lens cap installed because I lost it and was waiting for replacement. I've been having a bad run of luck! :-( The good news is that only the filter sustained damage. There is absolutely no physical damage to the M240 or Noctilux at all! BUT: The shock to the camera has put out the rangefinder, now it has a small vertical alignment error. Also, although I think it was always the case, there is a small horizontal (back focus) error as well... Aside from this, everything still works perfectly. So I consider myself lucky... I need to send it back to Leica for a checkup and calibration. This is my first digital Leica and first time I've had to use the service... What should I ask for in the service note (I'm a newbie)? Should I fess up and explain what happened? Will they charge me for this service and how much? I'm not looking forward to being without this camera for 6 weeks, I absolutely love this thing! Thanks everyone...
Advertisement Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Hi paulsydaus, Take a look here Dropped. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted December 4, 2013 Share #2 Posted December 4, 2013 I know how you feel - it has happened to me several times. You don’t have to ask for anything, just send the camera and lens in for being dropped and out of alignment. Leica will check it as it comes in and return it in perfect order. Yes, you will be charged and you’ll have to notify your insurance, as they are the ones who have to cover the cost. From your description there has not been much harm done. This is quite robust gear. k_g_wolf ✝ Posted December 4, 2013 Share #4 Posted December 4, 2013 Sorry to read your story, Paul. Since you are situated in KOREA it´s not an easy task to get the gear into hospital. Don´t forget a proper transportinsurance for the time it´s on the way. LEICA will also send it insured back to you. Hope this experience will not turn out too be exprensive for you. Happended to me at least 8 time in +40years and BILLINGHAMS were also involved twice. Shit happens ... Best GEORG
tthorne Posted December 4, 2013 Share #5 Posted December 4, 2013 Get insurance! Get insurance! I can't say it enough. I have a dedicated insurance plan just for my camera gear and it is the best piece of mind money can buy. I have over 40K worth of gear covered against anything for around 650 per year. Totally worth it. Glad to hear you didn't suffer any damage. One of my M 240s took a spill in which it sustained no damage at all but came out of alignment like yours. Thankfully we have a few reputable options locally for calibration and it has been flawless ever since. I paid, but I would much rather do that than send it to Germany and wait. paulsydaus Posted December 4, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted December 4, 2013 Dear George, I'll likely wait until I'm in Australia in January before I send it in. The language barrier is too high here and I don't trust the transportation industry... Yes I hope it's not too expensive, but the main thing is I just want it back in 100% working order! I'm hoping they can get an even better than factory standard calibration with my Noctilux in the close focussing range (1-2m)...? I'm hoping the service will not be more than say $500 USD? k_g_wolf ✝ Posted December 4, 2013 Share #7 Posted December 4, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) With a bit of luck it could this much, but I´am afraid it could also be +EUR 700 taking a trip round the globe into account. I got a reasonable insurance after one of my drops, but all in all an uninsured LEICA-life would have been MUCH cheaper. Best GEORG
paulsydaus Posted December 4, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted December 4, 2013 Thanks everyone. Just disappointed I'll be without this awesome camera for so long after only just getting the hang of the Noctilux... Oh well...
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted December 4, 2013 Share #9 Posted December 4, 2013 Can understand your disappointment VERY well. Nobody else to blame, that´s really bad. But camera and lens are still with you and seem to work resonably fine. Give your gear an intense workout before you turn it in. At the same time it will accelerate your photographic expertise. When it gets back to you it´s as good as new, no matter the state before ... Best GEORG
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted December 4, 2013 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2013 A short report on one of my mishaps: Had the M9 for a few days (2011) and carried it in an also new LOWEPRO 117 - rucksack US design <<made in China<<. Very much to be avoided never should have bought it,. In a little hurry I lifted the pack up without having fastened the bottom to the top carefully, to be honest the f .. thing was still open. In lifting it up camera and lens jumped into freedom and crashed on concrete. Can hear the sound till today. Unfortunately the camera was still so new, that it was not on my insurance list. jto555 Posted December 4, 2013 Share #13 Posted December 4, 2013 P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; } Hi Paul, sorry to hear about the mishap. I have a lens in with Solms for repair under warranty. Leica emailed me a UPS docket which took care of the shipping. They also emailed me a €0.00 invoice so I am assuming that you could go down this route as well and that they would email you the shipping plus cost of repair. Don’t forget that in Europe Leica offer a two day repair service at (much) extra cost. So they might also offer the same two day repair service to you with just the shipping slowing down the turnaround time. John
jip Posted December 4, 2013 Share #14 Posted December 4, 2013 I slipped and the M crashed on its back - One week turnaround' date=' 1850 Euro bill... Fortunately insured...[/quote'] How and where do you insure your camera, I'd like to but lost track of all the different companies claiming to be able to insure it. One of them even said it would fit in their camera insurance but since it's a classic camera (M240) they could insure it under 'Collectibles' I never responded. Since I didn't trust them a bit after that statement. Haha
paulsydaus Posted December 4, 2013 Author Share #15 Posted December 4, 2013 Thanks George, I will for sure! I'll post some recent stuff in the photo forum soon! paulsydaus Posted December 4, 2013 Author Share #16 Posted December 4, 2013 I remember reading that post... We all felt your pain! Well I guess now I have an upper limit, mine should be less than 1850 Euro!!! Ouch... I slipped and the M crashed on its back - One week turnaround, 1850 Euro bill... Fortunately insured... paulsydaus Posted December 5, 2013 Author Share #19 Posted December 5, 2013 Sorry to hear that.Hope you can get it fixed and checked pretty soon. Unfortunately I work overseas and I won't be able to send it in until January so it could be March before I see it back! On the bright side, it's still fully functional except for shallow DOF focussing I need to use the EVF which I have and works great! I'm actually a fan of the EVF/LV for this and other reasons. Don't think I'll ever touch movie mode though...
LocalHero1953 Posted December 5, 2013 Share #20 Posted December 5, 2013 Variation on a theme. I didn't drop mine, I fell on it. Rangefinder was OK but the lens (75mm APA-Summicron) is now back at Solms to have the focus adjusted.
