Guido Posted November 28, 2013 Share #21 Posted November 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Are there photo's of the camera, and what will be the price? The "Ralph Gibson Signature Leica MP" is currently available for $9,500 on Ralph Gibson's website. I would imagine a Monochrom edition to look much the same (black finish with red leather). Now given the price of the MP, and since it's a Monochrom, let's make this... $19,

Photoskeptic Posted November 28, 2013 Share #22 Posted November 28, 2013 I had rather buy one of Ralph's books .
Nick_S Posted November 29, 2013 Share #23 Posted November 29, 2013 His version of the MP removed the frameline preview lever. Perhaps his monochrome will follow a similar direction, red leather and no preview lever. Nick
wattsy Posted November 29, 2013 Share #24 Posted November 29, 2013 His version of the MP removed the frameline preview lever. Perhaps his monochrome will follow a similar direction, red leather and no preview lever. You'd think so or it would make a nonsense of the previous omission (dropped, I seem to recall, for tactile reasons). The Monochrom is already black chrome so a bit of maroon 'leather' and a little extra (ugly) engraving and, bob's your uncle, you have your special Ralph Gibson edition. wattsy Posted November 29, 2013 Share #25 Posted November 29, 2013 The "Ralph Gibson Signature Leica MP" is currently available for $9,500 on Ralph Gibson's website It's interesting that his special edition MP never sold out. I remember the collective indifference when it was originally announced and I have seen them offered on eBay (and possibly in the classifieds) for not much of a premium over the equivalent à la carte MP. I actually quite like the concept behind his stripped down MP edition and he has long been one of my favourite photographers (his Deus Ex Machina is what I'd consider a real "Desert Island book") but the idea of buying a camera with his signature engraved on the top has always struck me as irredeemably naff. Jeff S Posted November 30, 2013 Share #28 Posted November 30, 2013 While special editions have never been a big deal to me, I'm glad they are to others who continue to contribute to Leica's profitability, which helps us all as long as normal production isn't compromised. Jeff Yup - very true. However, is this kind of fund-raising really a core part of the Leica business plan? It is wearing pretty thin now.

Guido Posted November 30, 2013 Share #31 Posted November 30, 2013 However, is this kind of fund-raising really a core part of the Leica business plan? It is wearing pretty thin now. If everything had gone as planned within the normal business plan, Leica would not have needed the money. But then Sony unexpectedly released the A7/A7r, and this forum suddenly got swamped with buyer reports and reviews overnight. Leica officials panicked and decided to kick off an emergency "M-r" design project. The Ralph Gibson special edition is supposed to finance it. jonogilmour Posted December 3, 2013 Share #36 Posted December 3, 2013 I imagine there would be a much higher level of difficulty making a B&W sensor video and liveview capable because it's not a conventional sensor, if they did make a MM240. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
BerndReini Posted December 3, 2013 Share #37 Posted December 3, 2013 I imagine there would be a much higher level of difficulty making a B&W sensor video and liveview capable because it's not a conventional sensor Nope, no difference. Actually, RED already made a black and white video camera with a CMOS sensor for David Fincher. It was used for Justin Timberlake's music video. I don't know why anyone would care about a video function in a camera that only shoots black and white and I would hope they would leave it out, but it would most definitely have live view, otherwise what is the advantage of a CMOS sensor based Monochrom? Nick_S Posted December 3, 2013 Share #38 Posted December 3, 2013 If Leica are going to clutter the future Monochrom variants with liveview, they might as well throw in video. I find the idea of watching some 1.375:1 ratio classic format video material in B/W to be rather appealing. On the other hand, I would rather they just kept making the present version indefinitely, and finish correcting any remaining firmware issues. It is just about what I think of a Leica B/W digital camera being -- focussed on what it does and exquisitely executed. Nick
Peter H Posted December 3, 2013 Share #39 Posted December 3, 2013 To vent my personal prejudice and frustration with much current "enthusiast" photography, I don't think that whether a new version of the MM is made or not will make one iota of difference to the quality of photos the world ends up with. We will still get lots of photos whose best qualities are technical and which contain barely any of the excitement, imagination and exploratory creativity that contemporary photography should be capable of. (I do not exempt myself from this criticism, by the way.)
AbbeyFoto Posted December 6, 2013 Share #40 Posted December 6, 2013 I hope Leica will continue to develop the concept of a Monochrome. I know it is a challenge but I applaud the current offering and can hope for more.
