m.phan1985 Posted November 23, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi everyone... I am totally new to rangefinders and just sold all my canon gear plus flashes for an M9 with Zeiss 35/50 combo... my coworker asked me to shoot a family photo for her family and they have about 7 people... I am going early tomorrow around 9 am and was planning on shooting in the shades of the trees... might be a stupid question but does anyone who shoots with a leica use flash or strobes?... or does almost everyone use natural light?... adan Posted November 23, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 23, 2013 Let's put it this way - famed Leica and National Geographic photographer David Alan Harvey routinely DOES use flash: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/08/photogalleries/dividedsoul/images/primary/030814_BrazilCarnival_n.jpg http://digitaljournalist.org/issue9910/images/dh08.jpg ....and routinely DOESN'T use flash: http://digitaljournalist.org/issue9910/images/dh19.jpg http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0310/images/dah/48NYC24774.jpg ...on the rather sensible idea that you do WHATEVER you need to get the picture you want. Leica produces some phenomenal wide-aperture lenses for shooting in dim light without flash...and Leica also includes a hot shoe and ttl flash metering for using flash. So there is nothing about the camera that inherently favors doing one or the other. (One nice thing about rangefinder "window" viewing is that you can actually see the flash go off and know what moment you captured.) Me - I tend to use the natural light on location, and use the M9 with flash only in the studio. Although not always (see attached). It's pretty much up to you to decide and know what you want to capture and convey - and then choose the tools that will get you the picture(s) you seek..... M9 pictures WITH flash and WITHOUT flash (35 f/1.4) - same dark ballroom, different needs or intentions. earleygallery Posted November 23, 2013 Share #3 Posted November 23, 2013 Most Leica users don't use flash because they have a shoe mounted finder or thumb grip fitted to the camera Sorry can't help the chance for another dig at Leica for not fitting a PC socket to the digital M's. If you're thinking of shooting in the shade I take it you have bright sunny weather where you are? Lucky you. You might want to try fill flash to lift the image and help balance the light, but if you're not used to using flash you'll need to experiment a little and bracket a lot. You can tape some tissue over the flash to reduce the power if your flash isn't adjustable. The other thing to consider is a reflector, like a Lastolite. A large sheet of white card, or someone holding a white towel or sheet could work as well, move it around until you get a nice position and amount of bounced sunlight. You could also bouce a flash off it but that's getting more complicated I guess. I'd suggest trying a few different sets, in the shade and not, and maybe an indoor shot by available light and with fill flash. Good luck.
