polossatik Posted July 25, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, i'm looking for a digliux 2 or DMC-LC1... (just because of the non-intrusive aspect of those camera's) frankly i prefere the DMC-LC1 as look as it's less "catchy" and draws less attention but just to be sure is there now a difference between those 2 or not? any tips on how to "stealth" the leica ? thankx! ps: by the way if someone in EU has a camera to much , mail me
Advertisement Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Hi polossatik, Take a look here DMC-LC1 vs digilux 2 (sorry if this is the 25 the time). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dhsimmonds Posted July 25, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 25, 2006 Whilst the D2 & LC1 are essentally the same camera, they were originally shipped with different software and accessories. The LC1 is in my opinion the better camera to hold with it's hand grip and case covering being rather more "user-friendly". The LC1 also comes with a very useful electronic remote shutter control (similar to a shutter cable release and does the same job). If you end up with a D2, then it's black plastic sticky tape to cover up the glitz and (sacrilidge!) the red dot! The leica was shipped with raw conversion software.............but most users use other raw conversion software! As far as images are concerned there really is no difference. george + Posted July 25, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 25, 2006 What you say is true. But my Digilux 2 had to be changed twice. For troubles with autofocus and that loose rubberish cover. Leica did this without a murmur. I wonder, just wonder, if you could have gotten the same service from Panasonic. As a matter of fact, I know you could not. The Leica guarantee is for three years, the Pana for one. This may not matter much with older cameras but even the oldest Digilux 2 still has eight months of warranty left on it. dhsimmonds Posted July 26, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 26, 2006 George Good point.......when shipped new the Leica did have a longer warranty period than the Pana LC1. However in the UK, trade laws require the vendor to be responsible in the first instance for a buyer to obtain satisfaction under warranty. We also have actual Panasonic owned shops (one in Guildford) where I understand excellent service is obtainable to sort out after sales problems. The difference in warranty periods was more than made up by the massive difference in cost in the UK anyway. Fortunately after nearly 2 years I have not had need for service and neither has the rubber coating come off the body....it is still a very much well used and loved camera in fact! kobold Posted July 27, 2006 Share #7 Posted July 27, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I used to have the D2, and 'stealthed' it up some and posted shots on the old forum. In particular, the pop-up flash needs matte black tape: in the sun it becomes a mirror---right into your shooting eye, at times. I sold that and bought an LC1; no need to stealth that one. To add comments re. the original poster's question the LC1 is identical inside, except that the in-camera jpeg processing is a bit more agressive. As I shoot RAW, the cameras produce identical files, as far as I can see. As well, bought the $25 leather case that dugby mentions: now this rig lives under the front seat of the car. The LC1 will live there until my L1 gets here. Who knows when that will be.
martinb Posted July 29, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 29, 2006 I also prefer the LC1. Feels more robust and better built. Also has a nicer grip and to me looks better. + It's cheaper! Easy choice for me! Sold my LC1 I while ago though but miss it sometimes.
dugby Posted July 30, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 30, 2006 The LC1 also has an Auto ISO setting that allows the camera to self select between 100 or 200 (I recall it will not select 400 in this setting). I am not sure how useful this feature is, as I always shoot ISO 100. Though there was a thread on the old forum of extreme low light shooting at ISO 400 and +EV=2+. I did play with option and was quite astounded that the D2 could see things my eyes could not detect !! I must say that whilst in public I have been approached many times by strangers asking about my D2, as they immediately recognise the Leica brand, and am often asked if I am a journalist-photographer......which I am not, just an avid non-pro. I recently had a family member involved in a event that involved a personal meeting with our State Premier. When my D2 cameout, all the associated photographers and TV crews were giving me space to accomodate central based shooting of the event. So it became an access passport by the other pro's. But conversely I am a bit stranger-phobic, I have often wished I'd bought the LC1 to get that extra bit on anominity. It's a Catch-22, as I knew the retained value of the D2 would be higher than the LC1, as we are now seeing on ebay. There you go.....
andybarton Posted July 30, 2006 Share #10 Posted July 30, 2006 I don't want to get heavy about this, but can I just remind people that For Sale ads are NOT allowed on this forum. Sorry, but it is one of the stipulations by Leica and one of the conditions of their continued funding of the forum itself. No funding by Leica = no forum. I would therefore ask, very nicely, that the two posters above please remove the references to "kit for sale" from their signatures. I am sure that you understand. Thank you. PS - The "No For Sale Posts" Rule is currently displayed only in German at the moment, unfortunately. As soon as Admin comes back from his holiday, this anomaly will be corrected. However, the rule has been repeated often since the new forum started. I have made an announcement to this effect at the head of each forum section.
