nerve Posted April 17, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted April 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone, Â sorry to bother dear forum members with my silly question maybe, but i would really like to know if it is possible to use my 28 mm Ultron without hand coding on M8 (with the filter of course) after the last firmware especially.. (couldnt get my M8 yet! ..) Â after reading Sean's "beating the Blues: Cyan Drift and the Leica M8" i am even more confused now.. and looks like finding a ISBOO 14098 Leica Leitz thread mount adapter is impossible in these days.. so, do you really think i need hand coding for this spesific lens or its just ok without it (which has the least cyan corners afaik..)? Â thank to everyone in advance..

jlancasterd Posted April 17, 2007 Share #2  Posted April 17, 2007 Hello everyone, sorry to bother dear forum members with my silly question maybe, but i would really like to know if it is possible to use my 28 mm Ultron without hand coding on M8 (with the filter of course) after the last firmware especially.. (couldnt get my M8 yet! ..)  after reading Sean's "beating the Blues: Cyan Drift and the Leica M8" i am even more confused now.. and looks like finding a ISBOO 14098 Leica Leitz thread mount adapter is impossible in these days.. so, do you really think i need hand coding for this spesific lens or its just ok without it (which has the least cyan corners afaik..)?  thank to everyone in advance..  I've only had my M8 for 4 days but have used it with an uncoded Ultron for most of that time. For normal pictorial work I have had no problems - even with firmware 1.102 loaded - but then I haven't been trying to photograph people wearing black anoraks...  'Suck it and see' as the old adage has it. At least you won't be wasting money if you do some trial shots - unlike tests using film.  I *do* have an IR-cut filter on order for this lens and an old-style, Leitz 'full-skirt' screw-bayonet adaptor that I will get coded when the filter arrives. In the meantime I'm not going to worry.  See my 15 April posting on the following thread for an example of this lens used under very difficult lighting. http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/21587-results-we-want-see-results-1-a-3.html
scho Posted April 17, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted April 17, 2007 I've been using my 28 Ultron with a 486 UV/IR cut filter and although it is not coded I haven't run into any serious cyan drift problems. I can see it in snow covered landscapes in the corners, but for landscapes without a lot of white in the corners no problem. I would like to code the lens but so far I haven't located another leitz 9cm adapter. scott kirkpatrick Posted April 17, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted April 17, 2007 .. and looks like finding a ISBOO 14098 Leica Leitz thread mount adapter is impossible in these days.. so, do you really think i need hand coding for this spesific lens or its just ok without it (which has the least cyan corners afaik..)? Â Â First, the adapters seem to exist, but they are appreciating. The last one to sell on EBay went for $122 to the fifth bidder. The currently available CV adapters cost about $60. There's another ISBOO now up for sale on Ebay at more than that. Â Second, you can use a Heliopan or B&W filter (or a Leica filter if those become available in the size you need) without any coding, and you may see a small greenish tinge in the corners of your snow scenes, skies or other broad constant tone areas, but otherwise you will probably not notice the problem with a 28mm lens. Finally, you can code a oigtlaender mount in a somewhat fragile way by adding a piece of white tape at the base, being careful not to get under the actual mount and push the lens away from the level at which it should sit on the camera body. In that case you can obtain the benefits of the new firmware. If you do the coding and do not get a filter you also benefit by using the plain "ON" setting.
