Paul J Posted November 12, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 12, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking back over some shots last month I've just found that my M9 was appending T5216x3472 to the file name. So a file name reads T5216x3472-00042.dng. It then, after a couple days, seemed to magically revert back to the old film count. If I google T5216x3472 it reveals a whole bunch of peoples photos on Flickr shot with an M9. Obviously not an issue but just really curious. Any ideas WTH is that about? Advertisement Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Hi Paul J, Take a look here Weird numbering issue. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TonyField Posted November 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 18, 2013 So a file name reads T5216x3472-00042.dng. The numbers "5216x3472" seem to be the pixel dimensions of your M9 sensor active area. I have never seen a Leica recording that on a file name on the SD card. This looks like a possible file name format that was used when you copied your SD card to your computer. If you see this again, you should check if that file name is actually on the SD card or only happens when you copy the images to your computer with whatever software you use. Check what file name convention is used on your software.
250swb Posted November 18, 2013 Share #3 Posted November 18, 2013 Are the numbers used by the camera to avoid a file numbering conflict? Do you for instance reformat the card each time you downloaded the images from it, or just delete them, or worse still put the card back into the camera with the original files still on it? Its just that -00042.dng seems like a small number if the camera isn't brand new, and the camera may be starting to count again because of a conflict? Just a thought. wattsy Posted November 18, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 18, 2013 Do you import from the card via Lightroom, Capture 1 or some other bit of software? I wonder if it is the software altering the names. I always import using the finder only (drag the image files directly from the SD card to a folder that I've created on my computer) and I've certainly never come across anything like this. All my files are in the usual Lxxxxxxx.DNG format.
Paul J Posted November 18, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted November 18, 2013 Thanks guys, all good suggestions. It has me stumped but probably user error. That is a great suggestion about pixel dimensions as it's strangely very close at 5212x3468. The small number is strange also and indicates a temporary reset as I've taken around eighty thousand pics with it. It then reverted back to the existing number, I can't be quite sure why, if it was with a reformat, but because it was over a month ago. I'm guessing it was a reformat that reverted it. I take out the SD card and import into Lightroom. I've not changed any import settings in two years. By habit, I reformat the card every time it goes back in the camera. I wonder if it was some kind format error that created it. I agree some sort of conflict is quite plausible, either that or something I've done. wattsy Posted November 18, 2013 Share #6 Posted November 18, 2013 That is a great suggestion about pixel dimensions as it's strangely very close at 5212x3468. Not so strange, Paul. 5212 x 3468 is the size of the DNGs. 5216 x 3472 is the native size of M9/MM JPEGs.
01af Posted November 18, 2013 Share #7 Posted November 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I take out the SD card and import into Lightroom. So you're seeing the strange file names after import into Lightroom. What makes you think it's the M9 which was creating them?
Paul J Posted November 18, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted November 18, 2013 So you're seeing the strange file names after import into Lightroom. What makes you think it's the M9 which was creating them? Yes, good question. I'm supposing it's the camera as I've never touched the import settings on Lightroom in the two years of owning the camera and I can not find an option to append the pixel dimensions. But you may well be right. Either way I'm guessing it's not because I've unlocked time travel mode, or anything remotely interesting.
01af Posted November 18, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 18, 2013 I'm supposing it's the camera as I've never touched the import settings on Lightroom in the two years of owning the camera ... And how many times did you touch the camera's firmware? I am absolutely sure it's not the camera that creates those file names. It's either the computer's operating system or, most likely, Lightroom—even when you're not aware of having changed anything in the import settings. Did you look at the contents of the memory card before starting the import procedure?
Paul J Posted November 18, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted November 18, 2013 Yes it's the most realistic idea at this point and that makes sense. Unfortunately, no, I wasn't aware of it at the time. I've only noticed this recently when I was looking through shots that I took about two months ago. Firmware is still 1.176, same as when I bought the camera. Never really felt a need to upgrade it. Ecar Posted November 19, 2013 Share #11 Posted November 19, 2013 Did you update LR recently by any chance - or did you install a beta version perhaps?
