A very strange sale on eBay. Look up 4444443. What do people make of this?

Has a strong whiff of scam about it. Check his feedback to others. Lots of them are on the same dates.

Bargepoles and not touching spring to mind. Not that you would want whatever it is anyway.

It has been sold, and the seller is 100% reliable, a respected name in the used Leica and rarities world. The only negative thing one could say is that he is usually not the cheapest.

It looks like a development camera or a mockup. Some parts are different from the final camera. If provenance can be established it could be an interesting collectors item.

Fwiw, here is the description of the camera that the vendor had on his Facebook page a month or so back. Strangely, neither he nor Leica can explain the strange serial number:

"Rare version of the Leica M 240 Black. I'm not sure what this exactly is. It comes from an estate sale of a dealer. There are some strange things about this camera. The leather has been cust on both the left front and right side. Also it seems something on the left front side is missing under the leather. The leather has not been put very nice on the camera eather. I tried the camera but for now it doesn't work. Maybe it is just a small thing maybe not. I cannot say anything about this camera. Leica was asked about this cameras but they told they don't know this one. That is very strange of course as in my opinion all numbers are known at Leica. Furthermore the serial number is very nice (4444443). Maybe this is a prototype. Maybe Leica used it as an internal camera. I'm not sure."

We may be talking about a different seller, or perhaps a scam based on an originally legit sale. The camera in question is still on eBay, on auction by a seller called socameras based in the uk.
